Hi al,,

That's basically my question what metal material is the Eegine made from.

Unofortunately the cambelt had stretched due to the mechanic not placing it in properly. That bent the valves on the engine. I've been told that if the engine is of aluminium properly than it cannot be repaired.

Would it be possible to replace the engine valves on the engine?

From what I remember, the 1.4 engine has a cast iron block and an aluminium head.

Cambelts don't normally stretch. Sounds like the mechanic didn't tighten the tensioner properly when changing the belt...

As long as there is no damage to the valve guides or valve seats you could get away with replacing the bent valves. You'll have to take the head off to see what state it's in, and also to see if the pistons are damaged. Alternatively you could try and source another head and simply swap them over.

And I think you need to find a new mechanic who knows what he's doing!

All FIAT FIRE engines are cast iron blocks and alliminuim heads.

Is the belt jumps of the pulley or snaps then no doubt you would ove had Piston-to-valve contact and if it has which is most probably then youll need new valve(s) and piston(s).

Its easier to get a new lump but its up to you.

Is it a SX 1372cc uno?
Non-Turbo?

any damage that is done around the combustion chamber can usually be "lock stiched"
this is a process of milling out the damage and letting in new metal for a perfect and a as good as new finish.:)

Biz, it is a 1372cc uno.

Louie Bee, no the tensioners were not replaced
with regards to what you wrote that all The 8 Valve FIRE engines are all safe -
do you mean that if the cambelt brakes or stretches it does not capr up the valves.

I've heard from people that if the cambelt brakes on a turbo or a 1800 that the car engine is unrepairable. Is this the case for my uno? Because its only the valves that are bent and the piston damaged.

How much would you estimate it'll cost for the job of rpelacing the pistons and valve.

Thanks so far.

wasnt aware that all 8-valve units were safe.
Thort it was only my mums cinq! lol
Belt snapped on that a while back.

Safe = Pistons have valve cuts-outs in them so no contact is possible.

Tell the garage they can replace the engine or components as you are sopposed to re-new the tensioner along with the cam belt because they wear togeather.

Its their fault as far as i can see and as for cost, who knows.
£250-£400 but cant be certain.
just get a new lump mate.

Sorry for not explaining.

On the 8V FIRE engine, if the cam belt snaps the pistons miss the valves. Nothing gets bent (supposedly).

As far as I know, that not the case on most other engines.

Sorry, I’m not in any position to guess on a price to have fixed up. I don’t know if these engines are irreparable. It might be worth comparing quotes for having another engine fitted and for fixing the damage. Also compare prices with another Uno. They could mean it’s not financially feasible to fix.

Another route to get you’re odd 70 horses back could be a Punto engine :tempt:.

It would be interesting to know what you're tensioner is like now. It could have caused the new belt to go .

Bizz, the Start Plus is a Nat Asp (non turbo) in S trim.
