General Fiat Specialist

Dear All, I just read all the comments , I have the same issue. (sorry if I do not use the proper names , i am not native speaker). I have a similiar smell in the cabin of a fiat panda 4x4 2014 75hp diesel. i must close the air vent from the hob oterwise I get "exauset smell" like , only when driving slow, when I dive more that 40 miles h i do not have that smell. ( when I approch a red light and the engine is at idle the smell is quite strong. that is why I keep the air vent close.
I must book a garage appointment but I do not know where to find a fiat expert near manchester. a can see a bosh garage but I do not know if they can do works in my fiat panda. I hope the problem is the injectors only .
If the problem on yours is the injector seals in the cylinder head, then a good Bosch Diesel Specialist should have the tools and no problem doing this.
They may suggest having the injectors "reconditioned", but if vehicle is running well and had no problem with exhaust emissions at MOT time then you should only need the injectors pulled out, the seats where they sit in the cylinder head cleaned and then injectors replaced with the correct new copper washers.
I did this job on one of my daughters Fiats a 1.3 MJ diesel many years ago.
The problem I feel is the design that had each pair of injectors were held down by a single stud and nut, whereas most older injectors on other makes of vehicle were held down by two securing bolts/nuts per injector.
If you pull off the plastic engine cover and look down on the injectors you may see some with carbon stains where they sit in the engine, sometimes if you get someone to start the car from cold as you are watching you will see the combustion gas escaping and maybe hear a spitting noise. A damp cloth held over the individual injectors with engine running should quieten the noise and may help identify it, if lucky it may only be one or two causing the problem.
Incidentally have you checked for any exhaust blow in case that is the problem?

On your model you have to undo the plastic breather pipe by dipstick, the two large plastic pipes held by clips needing a special pair of pliers (you can do it without but more of a fiddle) nearest to the airbox, the breather pipe just below the MAF sensor then it should pull off to see the injectors.
Note if you release the MAF sensor by easing the yellow tab outwards a little then squeezing the clip to gain access, if you run the engine with it disconnected it will throw up an error code on dashboard.
This photo is from a 2014 Vauxhall Coblo1.3MJ which I am guessing is similar to your engine, the earlier 1.3 MJs were much easier to access.
