I found mayo-like substance under the oil cap of my fiat punto, 1998 model. I think i need to replace the head gasket. Can anyone advice me how to do this?

Dont jump straight to the HG, could be condensation (as said), Are you loosing any coolant?

From 2 experiences of HG failure on Mk1's, both same symptoms

NO oil in water or vice versa.
Continual slight loss of coolant
Slightly higher temps especially in stationary traffic
Gurgling sounds in heater matrix especially at tickover.
Slight misfire accelerating from cold start.
Much larger difference than normal in level of coolant in expansion tank when hot and cold.

The heads were removed and both showed evidence of leakage from cylinder to water jacket on no.3 cylinder.

Of course, both of these were the start of failure , not sure what happens if driven to the death !

if ur a bit of a dab hand with the old socket set go for it (y), id advise if u do it arm yourself with a HAYNES MANUAL first, this will give you info on torque settings ect ,
also while changing the gaskett clean up the bottom end and face of head with a light rub over of wire wool and then clean with rag ,dont want any little bits causing you a leak:slayer:
p.s have a look at my engine strip down ( PLUG)(y)(y) its on here
