hi i was just wondering if anyone has fitted a 2.0 turbo coupe engine in a mk1 punto because im thinking about doing it to mine, but i just wondered if it would actually fit with out having to cut the engine bay up, i was originally going to convert my mk1 sporting to a 1.4 gt, but would much prefer the coupe engine.
thanks jamie

people have done it to a mk2 punto

But remember - its not just the engine you have to upgrade

Its the suspension, the brakes, the drivelines, the tyres, the Electronics, its no easy feat

Dont forget to declare it to the insurance
DVLA and everything else

At the end of the day - is it really worth it?

No, just get a coupe

Ziggy has a valid point about the extras. Before you consider it, really research what would be involved.
As for is it worth it?
Hell yeah, if its worth it to you.
A guy transplanted the same lump into a multipla, was that worth it financially? Nope. Was it worth it for the respect and the coup de gras? Damn right.

Best bet with the series one Punto is the Delta Hf. It basically had a low compression version of the 1.6 Sporting or 90 engine and with the right turbo and management up to 250bhp without breaking the bank. Anything more than that and you'll need a balanced crank at least doubling your budget.

I wouldn't be too fussed about SVA/IVA points with an engine swap but once you start cutting the bulkhead, inner wings and front cross member about (as you would need to if you wanted a 16V Turbo in there) add £400 to the budget for someone in a white coat to look at it and say "Yep it's safe" if they're having a very good day.

thanks for the advice. i had already thought about having to upgrated everything else. im going to do some research anyway and see. i was just thinking about buying a coupe spares or repairs and taking everything off that to start off with like the brakes and that, but not sure yet, i still really want to do it because ive not seen another one with that engine in and would be very fun at a set of traffic lights, i think it would be quite fun to take up the drag strip to :D
thanks jamie

best off doing your research on puntosports.co.uk there are a few mk1 2.0 16v and 20v projects on the go but would say they are not straight forward or easy.

Have to agree with Ziggy, the fiat coupé was pretty unique and I wouldn't cut one up to put the engine in a punto, you have to consider that the mk1 punto even in GT form was never a great performance car and will never handle anything like the coupé or look as good.

The coupé with its engine will always be worth more than a punto with the same engine, the insurance will cost a bomb etc etc. just buy a coupé and enjoy it, they are a really nice car to own might be worth ago if you could get a badly rear end damaged coupé for a very low price
