I own a Fiat Ducato 2.8JTD CI Riviera Motorhome and have an engine management diagnostics light on the dash. I've taken it into a garage and they can't find the Diagnostic plug. After watching a video on youtube it seems its located behind the driver's side headlight. Has anyone bought the cables etc needed to run from the three pin plug to the 16 pin plug? I'm assuming the plug pictured is the diagnostic plug. The van is running beautifully as since the day I bought her but I'd like to sort it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is a frequently discussed subjaect on this forum. Yes the 3 pin connector with 2 wires attached is the x230 OBD port.

The company Gendan have been mentioned as good at providing advice, and I think the necessary adapter lead.

The following was included in a recent post of mine on a similar query. "To sumarise a simple 2 wire, 3pin OBD port was fitted to 2.8idTD x230 models when EGR was installed. The same 2 wire port was used on 2.8jtd x230 vehicles, to connect with the engine control computer."

Many thanks for your help, the lead is ordered from Gendan.

Hi Berniesbargreece,

It has occurred to me that you may be trying to use the adapter lead in conjunction, with a simple code reader. You may have limited success. The use of multiecuscan software, which to quote @Ocwobio "speaks fluent Fiat" has been reccommended. Another alternative which has been mentioned is AlfaOBD.

Hiya again guys

I have one of the switches clicking after the ignition is switched on. There is a diagnostic light on the dash but the van runs fine. I'm thinking the clicking switch and the Diagnostic light may be inked. Can anyone tell me the names of these parts, their importance and where I can buy replacements? its difficult to know which is clicking as they are so close together...

Hi,

The first picure is of the absolute pressure and temperature sensor on the inlet manifold. The second picture is of the electromagnetic solenoid valve for the flame start device.

When EGR is not fitted, the ECU uses data from rthe pressure sensor when calculating the amount of fuel to inject. It is not a clicking device, and if engine is running OK, then unlikely to be a problem, but any stored fault code should be checked.

The flame start device only comes into operation at sub zero temperatures, but both the valve and the relay for the associated glowplug could continue to operate after starting. Both the relay mounted in the engine bay, and the valve could click.. For more info see attached file for pressure sensor, and this link to Motor Roam for flame starter. On my x244 model the flame start glowplug relay is mounted under a hood at the rear of the engine bay.

Thanks for that help. Its appreciated. I have just been on the phone to the specialist who cannot fit me in for almost 8 weeks, I can't wait that long, the guy suggests that it is almost certainly the diagnostic sensor. Would you know where I can buy a replacement and where the sensor is situated? I apologise if this enquiry is pretty basic but I am absolutely useless regarding engines et cetera. Your help is greatly appreciated

Have you had the new lead actually plugged into garage diagnostics?
If not that sounds a strange diagnosis.
If you have a windows laptop get Multiecuscan and adaptor from Gendan, it talks fluent Fiat as does Alfaobd but I have never used it with older vans. This would require an android phone/ tablet and an adaptor.

these are screens from the simulation mode of multiecuscan

Hi,

I am not sure what you mean by "diagnostic sensor" in the above context. There are several sensors fitted to the engine, see attached extract from Fiat eLearn, and their outputs may be checked via the OBD port, and suitable software or a dedicated reader (computer). However none of these sensors are dedicated to diagnostics.

If you are refering to the absolute pressure / temperature sensor, you attached a picture of it, to post #5 of this thread.

It may be that if the vehicle has been standing for a long time, the fans may have siezed. Before even thinking about replacing the fuses, are the fans free to rotate by hand?

Update guys. Diagnostics result pictured.... all fuses are fine (that we know of) and fans have been checked and work when powered up. The Mechanic thinks it could be a relay or bad wiring; he does not deal with electrics. Any idea where the relay would be? Any advice? Are there any fuses in the box attached to the fan mounting?

Using the forum search function returned several results for "x230 +relays". I have linked to one result here , Please read post #2 by @airwave. About halfway down the second paragraph he states that the fan relays are under the bonnet.

You could try similar searches for the location of the fan fuses. Perhaps a few pictures of your engine bay would help others to identify components.

Any idea where the relay would be?
Yeah , the cooling fan relays , on my 230 IDTD (year 2000) are mounted on the top , of one of the cooling fan shrouds , itself mounted to the radiator , pretty much central engine bay . Remove the plastic cover from the shroud , by removing the four miniature bolts , then prising the base from the top . I have to admit , it's well disguised , as looking like a single component . I would post a photograph , but the earliest i could manage this , is the weekend . I'm working quite long hours at the minute , with a 2 hour commute every day .
My own van is an earlier version of the JTD , with exactly the same base engine . However the fuel and electrical systems are different , in the main , by the fitment of sensors , for the ecu to set the motor up . In real terms , it's a little more complicated than that , but you should get the idea . What bothers me , is your mechanic has missed this disguised box , where a non professional ( me ) found it , almost straight away ! .

There are two relays , one for each fan , and are the standard 4 pin type . Sorry i can't remember the amperage , but if needed i can find out .
