hello
I haven't been on here for a while.
I have a 2001 swift lifestyle on fiat ducato body, 2.8d engine.. (8014.63)
While going away for the weekend on 11th June.. it gradually lost power and I couldn't go any faster than 36mph
I was then alerted by a truck driver and when i checked i noticed blackish smoke was coming from exhaust .
I then pulled over on to a grass verge as we was on a dual carriageway.. i did not try anything more at the time as I didn't want to make matters worse..
I called the aa and seven hours later was recovered and taken back home.
Once home i have looked at the egr valve as after taking inlet pipes and air filter off i noticed white smoke was coming from the inlet pipe when i revved the engine..
I also noticed that the egr solenoid vacuum pipes where split and after checking for power at the solenoid with a multimeter i was getting 0.85v
(Not sure if this is normal or not) but when i rev the engine the voltage goes up to 5 to 6v
I have fitted a new solenoid and fixed the pipe but this makes no difference.... tick over is fine but holds back badly if i try to rev the engine..
Also the vacuum pipe goes from the egr to the solenoid then another vacuum pipe tees off from this and goes to a black box that looks like an eco but has a breather pipe fitting coming from the bottom of it...the other pipe from the solenoid goes to a vacuum hose near the fuel pump...at the top of the solenoid is a breather pipe with a small sponge fitted to it...
I can remove all of the vacuum pipes and unplug the electrical fitting to the solenoid and the engine runs slightly better but still holds back quite badly..
Also i am so far unable to locate the ecu..
I have ordered a replacement egr valve but I'm not 100% that this will fix the problem..
Would anyone have any suggestions please?
Any help would be greatly appreciated ... thank you

Would that apply on OPs 2001 vehicle with a lot controlled by vacuum?:)
I think that it would apply to any variable solenoid device controlled by the ECU. As an aside the fuel pressure regulator works in that way.

Also an old fashioned multimeter with moving coil operated pointer would be a good way to read the average voltage.

Hello again
Put the new egr on today, unfortunately it made no difference...one thing that was strange though was that i could hear the egr. Opening and closing fast while i was revving the engine.....it also still done this when i pulled the vacuum pipe from the egr..
There is a slight difference when i unplug the egr solenoid but still throwing out of the intake pipe.. blank plug will be tried on Saturday...

So possible what is meant to control it, is faulty.
At least if you blank it even just to confirm or not it will help if only for the purpose of elimination.

Hello
I blanked the egr today with a plate (eBay)
There was no spluttering or holding back from the intake pipe as before and it seem to run normal..
The only problem was that it seemed to run very hot, very quickly... couldn't hold my hand anywhere near the exhaust as was way too hot and the fan came on frequently ....also it left a soot mark up the side of the motorhome where the exhaust tail pipe ends...
Although this could have been excess cleaner from egr pipe etc...
As stated before i have changed the egr and solenoid so all i can think off is any sensors now...at a bit of a loss with it..

Was this on road test or static, as air going past may cool exhaust more?
Still gives you a better understanding of direction of travel, re EGR control etc.
