hello
I haven't been on here for a while.
I have a 2001 swift lifestyle on fiat ducato body, 2.8d engine.. (8014.63)
While going away for the weekend on 11th June.. it gradually lost power and I couldn't go any faster than 36mph
I was then alerted by a truck driver and when i checked i noticed blackish smoke was coming from exhaust .
I then pulled over on to a grass verge as we was on a dual carriageway.. i did not try anything more at the time as I didn't want to make matters worse..
I called the aa and seven hours later was recovered and taken back home.
Once home i have looked at the egr valve as after taking inlet pipes and air filter off i noticed white smoke was coming from the inlet pipe when i revved the engine..
I also noticed that the egr solenoid vacuum pipes where split and after checking for power at the solenoid with a multimeter i was getting 0.85v
(Not sure if this is normal or not) but when i rev the engine the voltage goes up to 5 to 6v
I have fitted a new solenoid and fixed the pipe but this makes no difference.... tick over is fine but holds back badly if i try to rev the engine..
Also the vacuum pipe goes from the egr to the solenoid then another vacuum pipe tees off from this and goes to a black box that looks like an eco but has a breather pipe fitting coming from the bottom of it...the other pipe from the solenoid goes to a vacuum hose near the fuel pump...at the top of the solenoid is a breather pipe with a small sponge fitted to it...
I can remove all of the vacuum pipes and unplug the electrical fitting to the solenoid and the engine runs slightly better but still holds back quite badly..
Also i am so far unable to locate the ecu..
I have ordered a replacement egr valve but I'm not 100% that this will fix the problem..
Would anyone have any suggestions please?
Any help would be greatly appreciated ... thank you

Is this the engine you mean?

SOFIM 8140.63

This is the acronym of the aspirated variant with indirect injection of the 2.8 SOFIM to diesel. In this variant, the maximum power reaches 85 hp. This variant has been mounted on:

  • Fiat Ducato Mk2 2.8 D (1996-99);
  • Iveco Daily Mk2 2.8 D (1996-99)
  • Renault Master Mk2 2.8 D (1996-2001).
To be honest I thought at that age most were Direct Injection and if turbo intercooled were all over 100Hp for the 2.8, surprised it has EGR etc. Was it produced or intended for an overseas market with stiffer regulations.
Does sound like some for of exhaust restriction.
I assume no turbo side air leaks lack of boost wise?
The later Common Rail engines required an ECU.

Apparently the Sofim 8140.63 (2.8D) was a naturally aspirated indirect injection engine. No turbo . Apparently EGR was fitted to some 2.8idTD engines, and as both are not common rail sngines controller was probably similar. I have a memory of a photo being posted of such a controller being posted, but I have not suceeded in locating it.

As no turbo boost to loose, I am windering whether the EGR valve was opening when it should not, and starving the engine of oxygen. Hence unburnt fuel and black smoke, and loss of power.

Perhaps the OP could post some pictures of his engine bay, which may help in identifying the EGR control unit.

My mistake, I didn't read the D bit as in none turbo.
One does wonder why any one would sell an 85hp version of a 2.8 Indirect Injection for that age of vehicle, given it probably lost out on fuel economy and power.
Would fitting an EGR blanking plate at least temporarily, prove or disprove the issue to aid diagnosis?

I was having a similar thought.

Hello
Thank you for your replies, i have some photos of the engine bay which i will add shortly....i have been told that it does have an ecu..behind the drum type air filter... which has a vacuum pipe coming from it....i have seen this but was unsure if it was an ecu as it is just black plastic an quite light ...
I have another egr valve which is the diaphragm type coming tomorrow....i also do have a tester delivered today to check the diaphragm on the existing egr valve....
BUGSY MIKE ..yes Sofim 8140.63 is the correct engine
It wasn't fast to begin with but now could be overtaken by hedgehogs..
To be fair it only has 45000 miles on it and under the plastic engine cover it still looks like new..
Also it had a replacement gearbox put in in 2022 by the previous owner..
Will post photos when i get back
Thanks again for the replies

Hello
I haven't got any photos of the full engine bay at the moment but will add some tomorrow...theses ones are of the ecu..egr valve and agr valve solenoid.
Thanks
