Hello everyone
Advice please I have a Fiat Ducato 2.5 turbo engine in a Autotrail Cheyenne 634 Motorhome, 1998. Only done 32000 miles but does produce a lot smoke, especially when not used for a while. Is there anyway of reducing the exhaust fumes or is it worth changing the engine for a newer & quieter version? Appreciate it might not make economic sense!
Thanks Rich

Hi :)

Oil smoke.. or unburnt fuel?

If its bad injectors..or a choked air intake..

A new engine wont help

Don't worry about it ,its caused by unburnt cold fuel, onto a cold inlet manifold, the white smoke can be reduced by having the timing advanced slightly ,but still does it after a long lay up. Just about all of these older, non electronic ducato's do the same ,My 1999 did it from new.Earlier ones had a manual cold start pull, which advance the timing.and there were no problems with them. Usually clears after a couple of miles.Better, much better than putting up with all the problems that the later computer controlled common rail engines have with constant warning lights and limp modes kicking in.Don't thnk about changing engines Yours is a better option. Only happens after a long lay up ,or if camping in thr winter after a couple of days, when you gas the tent dwellers.

Hi everyone Apologies for not responding sooner!
thanks for your replies & advice, much appreciated, we plan to use the van more often which should help and I will use the fuel system injector cleaner, It might be my imagine but I always think cars keep well back when I take the van out after it’s been parked up, but look gassing the tent dwellers again soon?
