I'm pretty desperate, spent months renovating the motorhome. The vans self sufficient now, new electrics, walls, lighting.....

But! I have a pretty horrible knocking in the lower engine and loss of power.

I think the best thing is to replace the engine with a more powerful and economical engine, but which one?
I'm pretty handy, but picking an engine is beyond me. Any ideas really appreciated.

@bugsymike

Your best bet would be to pick the best available version of the engine already fitted. That way you retain original ;gearbox, engine mounts, drive shafts, fuel supply, braking system electrical wiring.......and loads of other stuff.

Give us a clue what the engine code is and if it is turbo charged or not.

How many miles?

1994 was a far while ago now.....you may struggle to find a replacement and may well be forced to have your engine rebuilt.

There are many instances of the 2.5 being swapped for the 2.8 BUT it really depends on type as to what’s compatible with existing gearbox…you really wouldn’t want to be going from 2.5 non turbo to 2.8 turbo
There are a few dedicated van strippers and engine swappers around the country.
They’re pretty prolific and can even be found on eBay

presume if it's a 1994 motorhome with 2.5 diesel it could be any one of a number of the SOFIM 8140 series engines
naturally aspirated
turbo'd
turbo intercooled

Wiki SOFIM 8140
Or someone may have already fitted a 2.8 on the same gearbox.
The early 2.4 and 2.5 were 8144. not the 8140.series which could be 2.5 indirect injection or 2.5 and 2.8 indirect or direct injection , NA, Turbo , TDI and Common Rail with a wide range of Hp. So an accurate Serial number would be useful.
