General Fiat Ducato 1991 LHD Floppy column change

I have just acquired a Fiat Ducato Motorhome disguided as a Hymer.
It is 2.5 Diesel 4x4 LHD first registered in 1991 and imported in 2008.
The column change gear lever is very floppetty.
I want to avoid the lottery that is the present gear change (eg from 1st to reverse is common !!).
Where do I start please and has anyone a diagram of what goes where in the linkages.
Sorry to be so technical but I'm NEW and can't find how to join a Hymer motorhome group.

Is there a specific forum or group for Fiat Ducato based motor homes do you know ??

They have a section for the different base vehicles but most are on Ducato chassis. Questions asked in general chat usually get an answer.
