When I removed the engine from my 500R I first removed the exhaust including the elbows and when it was reinstated the exhaust was the last thing to fit. That was no problem but now I want to remove the back panel to access the oil filter and the engine mount fouls on the exhaust elbow when it is loosened. I don’t want to disturb the exhaust elbow again so am I supposed to jack up the engine until the spring is loose? And if so is it possible to jack it up too far?

The workshop manuals simply says remove the bolt and the 4 panel nuts and all online videos seem to skip over this step as maybe it is too obvious. On the basis of there is no silly question if you don’t know I thought I would ask.

The long bolt that goes through the engine mount is what holds everything together. You must support the engine before removing it. You could jack up the engine to relieve the weight on the engine mount, or jack up the car until you can put a block of something under the engine, then lower the car again.

Remove the bolt and the dish that it sits in will be pushed against the exhaust elbow by the spring. But the spring is springy, so it can be manoeuvred out of the way. It will all come apart without removing the exhaust elbow. For reassembly, I use a couple of clamps, one either side of the dish. By compressing the spring this way, you can get the bolt back in. It is a bit of a faff, but it will work.
