Hi Everyone

My wife's Fiat 500 died on Friday and went I to limp mode, she called the AA out and the guy said the engine could of possibly jumped a tooth on the timing belt, on there report the scan has shown up with a 9GFP0011 Camshaft 1 and a P0016 Crankshaft Position Sensor, as you can see by the report which I will attach, I was going to attempt the cam belt change this weekend, which I have proceeded to do, I stupidly thought that a 500 would be the same as the Grunde Punto I once had, I took the cambelt off fully expected to see a tooth missing or 2, absolutely nothing, the belt needed changing but every tooth was intact and no broken teeth on Camshaft sprocket or anywhere else, I locked both cam and crank, changed the waterpump, now I am attempting to put a new belt on and I just can't get it on, it so so tight, I'm beginning to wonder if I've done anything wrong, are the 500 belts super tight, any info or help, point in the right direction would be appreciated people

Thank you Reedy

Jumping a tooth will not mean it's lost a tooth, there are a few dozen teeth engaged. It means it jumped a tooth as in the belt and cam are out by one tooth.

Nearly all modern timing belts feel too tight to go on. The locking kit is a must as there are no timing marks. And you will also have a pile of experts on here telling you that you are doing it wrong.

If in doubt hold the two belts up together.

Thanks m8 for the reply, yeah done that held the 2 belts together same size, it's me then, I aint done a cambelt in a few years, especially on a Fiat, I'll give it another go, I mean it's nearly there, so I'll solider on.

Cheers

Also forgot to mention, The Mrs also drove for about 1 1/2 miles while the Engine Mgmt light was on and in limp mode til I told her to stop and get it recovered, question is there any tolerances on the 500 or will it need a compression test on the cylinders, shudda done this I the 1st place, I'm an idiot. 🤪🤪🤪😩

Update

Got it all most all back together, pattern parts especially water pump are slightly bigger than original parts, hence how tight the belt was, my m8 came and got it on, started it up and it was on the money, no chuffing and hopefully no valve damage but like I say got to finish it off and run it, thanks for the input people.

👍👍👍👍

Update 2

Had a p0011 code pop up over the weekend, thought he we go again, potential timing problem, anyway to cut a long story short, I pulled the vvt solenoid out and cleaned and tested it as advised by a Fiat Mechanic, apparently the solenoid is the cause for quite number of fault codes and will ping on the EML on, just thought I'd share it for your info if anyone is experiencing the same prob.

Cheers

The 1.2 is unburstable, just seems to plod on
Had a 1.1 panda selecta that jumped a tooth, but that was much more simple to replace the belt
I agree the 1.2 is rock solid, can be a bit oil sensitive, the wife put 15w 40's in it, bless her, I'm not surprised the vvt solenoid was full of crap.
