Unless the AC pulley is seizing up (and from what you've said so far, it doesn't sound like it is), you're right - it doesn't sound as though it's the compressor that's causing the problem. Shredding on the outer edge is typical of a knackered tensioner pulley. It droops when either its mounting plate gets tired and flexes away from the tension, or the bearings in the tensioner pulley itself start to go. Does the car squeal at all at tickover or when you first start it?

Cant say ive heard it squeal.

But I do remember having a fiat doblo and that thing squealed all the time on tickover when revved it was fine, no a/c but never snapped a belt.(y)

I've purchased a complete multipla 1.9 jtd 110 bhp sx 2002 with ac for £100
going to take the bits of that and see how it goes.:slayer: I'm going to open another thread about the faults on that one.

Just had some one rev the engine while i carefully looked for belt movement.

With the standard belt fitted (inc. a/c) the tensioner is wobbling about.

With the shorter belt fitted (i.e. no a/c) the tensioner looks fine. But seen as its not the correct belt is the reason why it's come off. I guess all it took was a bit of wobble on the tensioner.

has been bookmark, this seems like a very interesting thread
