Hello Guys,
my 2001 Punto 1.2 8v started leaking coolant and oil from the head gasket to the outside.
So I got a new one from Elring and cleaned the maiting surfaces with a sharp razor blade and brake clean. After that I installed it how the Haynes manual states. I also replaced the valve stem seals with new ones.
The last oil change was around 900km ago.
Now to my question:
I have these little bubbles on the oil dipstick, the picture was taken after the car sat for around 5h after the last drive.
Are these bubbles from a incorrect installed head gasket, like a coolant leak in to the oil?
And after around 1000km of driving the coolant level in the reservoir didn't change or not so much that I noticed it. The oil level has decreased by maybe 3 mm.
But the head gasket just now started leaking on the exhaust manifold side, not much but the gasket seems "wet".
What have I done wrong during the installation?
Should i have had the head skimmed ?
Should i have had used scotch brite on the maiting surfaces ?
Or something else ?
Should i try it again what should i do diffrently ?

Cheers Benji.

When changing a head gasket I would always after cleaning the cylinder block and cylinder head check the two surfaces for flatness using a steel straight edge and a 2 thousands of an inch feeler gauge in all directions across the two surfaces, if the feeler gauge pulls out easily then that surface being measured is not flat and will not seal a good new gasket so will need machining perfectly flat again.
Also I clean every thread hole that cylinder head bolts screw down into so that when I fit the new bolts and correctly torque them up with a good torque wrench then I know that the gasket will be correctly doing it's job.
Usually it is just the aluminum cylinder head that will need machining flat if engine got too hot , but not always , so wise to check both.

Head gasket job is not for amateurs/beginners. But you must learn somewhere. And old FIRE family is perfect for that. Go figure.
Example, Punto 1 (1,1 8V): https://www.fiatforum.com/guides/head-gasket-replacement-diy-resurfacing.700/
You can't just replace the gasket, you must check for flatness and so on (multiple steps, that no service manual covers - you must "read between the lines").
