well its finally happened, my clutch went on thursday, so while I wait for new clutch toarrive, I have to decide whether to bother fitting the 6speed box I have for the mk1.

NOW, I've done a good search and found reference to a spanish/italian punto forum with spec's inc gearbox ratios for all the different mk1 boxs.

it appears that the 6th gear IS actually lower than the 5th (.708 rather than .9??) so would result in a lower rpm in 6th @ 70mph.

HOWEVER that website seems to suggest that teh final gear ratio is MUCH lower overall, making 6th actually an equivlent to 4th on a std 5speed:eek:

does anyone have any information for UK spec mk1 punto gearbox's, as I belive tehy *may* be different.

cheers all(y)

my girlfriend has a mk2 sporting with the 6 speed box and i can confirm that 6th feels way longer than 5th in my bravo. her car cruises along nicely doing 100mph @ 4000rpm. its what makes the car so amazing on the motorway, you can go fast and still use bugger all petrol. what a great idea! i still cant believe its only a 1.2 with 80bhp. i really wish i had 6 gears :(

1.2 16V IN mk1 and mk2 varient both get different gearboxs to the 8v in each respective mk.

thanks anyways!!

theres always been debate over what ratios the mk1 6speeder actually produces, and from the info I found 1st -5th are the same, 6th is yet higher (so lower rpm at same speed etc) HOWEVER the site suggests the final drive is 4.3 something, which is like a track area type final drive ratio

i find it hard to believe, if that was true 1st would require a change at 20mph or less. it would be like riding a 50cc 2 stroke bike. rev change rev change rev change rev change rev change speed limit approaching!

yup you got it(y)

1st gear on the 6speeder (using that final drive) would result in 22.4mph @ 7000rpm, which my car won't do, limit is 6500:rolleyes:
2nd gear 7k = 40.? mph
3rd gear 6k = 60.5mph.

it is about .75 seconds quicker to 60 than its 55/5speed counterpart. but fuel economy takes a hit, 70mph in 6th is like 4200rpm:eek: rather than 5th on the 5speeder which is 3850rpm, which is still way too high!!

although we used to have a citroen zx diesel, it was geared stupidly, 60mph was 2800rpm (nearly the same as my petrol punto), means it couldnt really do more than 70mph, as the diesel wouldn't rev past 3600rpm without a fight, stupid french

thanks beau, but I already know though's ratios, and from them, it all looks rosie
but from information I found somewhere else, the final drive of the gearbox (diff gearing basically) is far far lower, making 6th on the 6speeder more like FOURTH, yes 4th on the std 5speeder.

do you know the final drive ratio's beau?
