Hey guys.

So i bought my brand new T-Jet in October, and to change my insurance to it for the remaining 5 and a half months was an extra £240 on the £670 i had paid for my 1997 Pug 306 beforehand, and to go from TPF&T to Comprehensive which didn't seem too steep.

Now i'm coming up to my renewal, and they want £1370 to insure me (im 20 (21 in june) 2 years no claims, and 3 years since i passed (i was a named driver for a year) and this is an Admiral multicar policy, I also have my mum and dad as named drivers).

When i got it, I thought it would be best to let them know of my optional extras, when they said "are there any modifications", i said "no, only factory fitted options" which they asked me to list. which are the Two Tone alloys and the rear window tints (and these are now listed on my policy).

A friend of mine is insuring his Zetec S which is an insurance group higher than mine (Zetec S is 7, T-Jet is 6) for only £1100 and he is only 19, but his tints are standard on a Zetec S apparently.

So should my factory fitted tints and alloys be affecting my insurance, is it normal for them to consider factory options as modifications, or am I stuck as I cant really not declare them now that they know about them...

ALSO! using a little mathematics, i worked out that the £240 i paid last year equates to about £570 over a year extra on my £670 original which by my maths is £1240 with 2 years licence, and 1 years no claims. so now i'm being charged £130 more! i thought insurance went down as you got older!

Admiral claim its more because apparently i used my no claims discount when i changed to the Punto and paid £240, which sounds ridiculous. i feel i am being seriously ripped off, am I right to feel this way?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Try Aviva, im 18 1 year NCB - 1.9 MJET (insurance group 6) £1200.

That thing about "using your NCB when you changed cars" sounds rediculous. Surely you could just take out another policy, even if its with them and reapply the NCB you have accrued over the years?

i remember when i rang for a quote from direct line i said its got privacy glass as an option the guy went like crazy and said no modifications its a modied car now we wont insure you under 25 years of age with a modified car ...i went with quinn who told me unless its performance related then they dont care lol

i moved from aviva to quinn and saved what 600 for the year :) its all down to your postcode i have a friend who lives within 1/4 mile of my house but different postcode different rules, we put both of my information in the comparison site only changing the nearby address and it was cheaper for his place by 200!

Insane. I know that premiums are meant to be going up again, but that's mental. Guess the lesson to be learnt is shop around.

Be careful with that mate. I have had a company refuse to continue my cover for that. I had my car and licence registered at my parents house while I lived elsewhere. I phoned my insurance company to tell them that the car would be spending its time elsewhere and they told me no. The insurance company wasn't willing to cover "that risk". I have no idea what the risk was, but they insisted on only covering me if all my documents were listed at the same address as the insurance.

nah i didnt take the risk i told them its at my home on the street i was very honest when he told me the price for his 2.0 was lower than my previous 1.3 i couldnt believe it til i conducted that comparison site test! if i was gonna do it id say its in a garage at my dads house with lasers and guns and stuff :p

the problem with shopping around is there are only a few companies that do multicar, Direct Line do but wont insure me with the tints, i will try to find some more though.

also about the postcode, the car is on a driveway, and mine is a "Low Risk" postcode, so that's not the problem, you can check you postcode insurance risk here

Saw the Admiral ad a few days ago, and at the bottom it says 'Multi car policy may not be cheaper'.

Takes a while, but try phoning companies up who offer a low quote, might get it lower.

Aviva where very cheap for me, paid £914, renewal was £800ish, Aviva quoted me £575 :D.

I have all my factory options listed on my policy, I think its only fair tbh. The insurance company know every detail about my car, so if if I come to claim they have nothing to argue against me because of undeclared changes. So having everything on paper, I am absolutely sure my policy is not invalid.
And I didn't investigate quotes without everything declared (I thought it was best that way) so I can't give you any information in variation of price.

Thanks for that website, its quite interesting. My area is in group D (n)

Tell your insurance provider that the tints are part of your safety improvements!!

Is that the sort of safety improvement that stops other road users from being startled by the occupants? :p

lol just because I may see them as "safety improvements" doesn't change the fact they see them as modifications which apparently means I am a boy racer because my car has modifications.

I checked on Money Supermarket (but I didn't bother declaring modifications) and the cheapest that came up was £980 and the rest over £1200, up to £4500, Admiral have been kind enough to lower my premium to £1310 from £1370 because we have been with them for a few years as an incentive not to change. and considering with admiral, they will replace my alloys with the same alloys in the event of a claim, and my tinted glass with tinted glass (most companies will replace with standard), and also my parents and sisters insurance all comes out more expensive on separate policies (and my sister can barely afford it as it is).

I guess I will bite the bullet and hope that maybe staying with them will pay off when it comes to next year when i'm over 21 and my insurance goes down to £500 lol... I wish....

Improves the safety of your vehicle because potential thieves can't have a quick browse to see if there's anything worth stealing inside, tints will block their view so they won't risk breaking in for nothing. And if it the window is smashed the tint film will keep the glass together preventing it from shattering and injuring people inside. :D

went on GoCompare, and the cheapest quote was £780, and guess who it was from... Admiral, gave Admiral a call and my insurance is now £820 (added cover for the optional extras and personal injury cover)

so quite conclusively Admiral were ripping me off, charging me £550 more than they would on a single policy for no good reason!

Brilliant! 20 year old with a T-Jet and extras declared for £820... not too shabby
