i used to be able to click on friends and the top left then on the different groups i had put friends into, so if say i just quickly wanted to see what family members were up to i'd click friends/family and only status updates of that group would be shown.

now if i click friends all i get is loads of thumbnails of people i may know

Try going to Account in the top right, then Edit Friends, then as you hover over each friend you can change/edit their list.
