hi guys and gals, I'm new to the forum and i need help/advice! the front of my exhaust (punto '51 plate) started blowing the other day and i just took in to a garage, apparently its all cracked, and they have quoted £250/£300 for a new exhaust manifold and said its the cat convertor area that all need replacing as to why this is pricey, now I'm also new to owning a car, but friends say thats an expensive job, does this sound right or am i been ripped off? i wanna get it sorted asap, and am happy to do this myself, as I've worked on my bikes for years i am mechanically minded, to a degree, could anyone recommend a supplier for the part?

any help/advice would be much appreciated

something like this any good??

about £90 off ebay

seeing as its split then you dont need to worry about the cat to centre section bolts not undoing
so
take old cat off remembering to undo both lambda connecters i forgot one yesterday whilst im trying to swing it down and out d oooh
anyway once cat off you can grind the flange bolts that connect to centry pipe in comfort on axle stands
a replacement cat is easily purchased for less than £100 exchange with your old one as these are cut up to have a new ceramic monolith welded in and then sold to the next customer
avoid the cheap cheap manifold cats as they use cheap inners and often fail the mot a year later and out of warranty

or consider a s/h one with a guarantee

i welded up one yesterday to the original strength plus on the flange so they are weldebable by the way if you want to save monies

I think I'm gonna have a proper look myself see if I can get some pics too for ya thanks for the help

Ive the same problem and the flexi pipe on mid section is falling apart too i know this but split in cat was a suprise, i was quoted £244 just for the manifold and a further 60+ for mid section and 40 for back box.... so ive brought a type aproved complete system off ebay for £137 and the manifold turned up today so since weekend ive been spraying manifold bolts with WD40 to loosen them up as there quite corroded and would prob snap off under pressure so in bid to prevent this WD40 is my friend lol. I managed to get a deal with the seller who also threw in gaskets and brackets to sweeten the deal ?

GT 85 or Plus Gas will be a better friend. WD 40 is a great de-watering agent, but as a penetrating fluid it ain't much cop.

Chances are the studs will come out together with the nuts (surely they're not bolts?). No biggie -- just use the old two nut trick to get them off, following a soak in penetrating oil.

Yh they are studs just i call them all blots lol screws n bolts is all thats in my vocab when it comes to cars.... but thanks for the advise on how to remove them will be attempting to change it on the weekend ☺ (providing old one doesn't fall off between now and then ?

did youngests 51 plate last week - easy peasy - definitely a diy task - heat shields - wondered what the extra threaded fittings were on the cat - just checked daughters Mk2B and her's are still there :) save the labour and DIY it- no special tools needed
