They are quite happy to sell you a Fiat multijet 150 16v or Vectra CDTI 150 16v that has the swirl flap actuator bar completly detached and the car needing a complete new inlet manifold, about £1000 parts and labour. If you take it back they will say it is not covered by their warrenty !

Would disagree.

I bought my Multipla from Evans Halshaw 2 months ago. Customer service was brilliant. Staff brilliant. Prices undercut main dealers. They even serviced it and put on 4 new continental tyres and replaced the discs and pads on the front.

If they don't explain that before they sell the car [i.e. all defects need to be pointed out], surely they are still liable, irrespective of the non-warranty clause!!!

I've had two suspension springs, two drop links, an ABS sensor, dual mass flywheel, clutch and my gearbox reconditioned on the basic Evans halshaw warranty which cost me £300.

Their standard warranty on what they choose to call "Runabouts" (ie. under £4000) is only for 30 days or 1000 miles maximum, and I quote covers only: "Mechanical failure due to sudden and unexpected circumstances of: "Engine, Transmission & Final Drive Assemblies". Google Evans Halshaw and you will see they have the most terrible customer feedback when there is a problem with a used car they have sold.

Their aim will be to sell you an additional 1 years warranty at extra cost.
