Hi folks, just been refurbishing a set of Cinq wheels for the 126. I cleaned them, sanded them, cleaned them again with Fairy liquid, let them dry and now i'm applying the etch primer (Acid 8) before painting.

However after just 10 seconds it begins to craze and crack! Thought it might be better on the 2nd layer but again, as soon as it's applied it crazes. Any ideas? I only have a bit left, i don't want to waste it all!

Thanks

Don't really know much of this area, but would of imagined something along the lines of meths would of been best for removing any traces of grease left on the wheels, allowing the primer to act directly on the surface of the metal?

Washing up liquid will leave traces i'd imagine. Is it what it suggests to do on the tin of primer?

It just said use "detergent" to remove grease etc.

lol go a buy a tin of panel wipe its only a fiver a gallon, fairy will leave behind residues that react with paint

Live and learn i guess! I'm going to get some paint stripper today and then strip them back to bare metal. Then etch and paint again. Still got the lacquer left so lost £20 so far :(

Thanks for advise chaps. It's really not worth spending much on them, the wheels with new tyres only cost £50! And the paint cost £30 so it's becoming daft now (bearing in mind i'm currently spending a lot on other parts for the 126, and servicing the A500, where does it stop? :()

Me thinks i'm going to strip them back again with paint stripper and then etch/paint again...

OK can use whiter spirit to degrease, and when applying the etch dry coats dusted on , not wet . this will avoid the crazing
