Technical Error code P0135: Lambda 1 heater above catalyser

Hi Folks,

My first try of the MultiEcuScan / ELM interface was to get a persistant error code: Lambda 1 heater above catalyser. I have the electric warning light on too and through this forum, I have found that it is a linked with the reported fault. I also found that it could be a blown fuse, and would like to replace the fuse before I go to the mechanic (Assuming that the lambda sensor cannot be replaced by a novice).

Cold you kindly tell me where to find the fuse please? I had battery issue problems, and might be the reason of a blown fuse. I was driving the car at 50mpg some 2 weeks ago and now seems to dropped to 42 and below.

Lambda is easy to replace. Don't get a white box or universal one.

AFAIK, there is no separate fuse for that circuit.

JUST a clarification the warning light that I have on my dashboard is not the red engine light but the light (bulb icon) amber light. I just noticed the users are reporting the P0135 error code with the engine warning light.

Presuming the OP's got an 8v -- is the lambda the same as the pair on the 16v?

If so, I've just bought a pair of NTK ones from Big Mick (£80 each, before the FF discount); although he also offers Febi Bilstein ones for £50 each ("which have caused us no problems but are a bit cheaper"). I know they're not the cheapest; but I trust Mick to supply quality stuff... -- and he's never let me down, so far.

Hopefully, these will last another 90,000 miles (although may need a new manicat, before then...).

Sorry if I may sound awful, but please, before purchasing the Lambda sensor, could you pls tell me the LOCATION of the fuse to check that first: assuming there is one as I read elsewhere.

Secondly and perhaps adding more puzzling, I resetted my mpg and while I still have the lambda error, the mpg was a stunnng 49mpg, 3-4mpg above average?!? Strictly speaking the symptom of this error is bad fuel consumption = low mpg ?! Confused!

Yes there is a fuse for the Lambda's

However - its also connected to the Vehicle speed sensor on the gearbox and the evaporative canister (the fumes collector in the driver wing)

If that fuse was blown - i'd expect you to be getting more errors then just lambda

Engine bay fuse box - Fuse F11 15amps
Bottom left hand corner - 3rd fuse up

Also - what is the Actual code been produced
For eample P0137?

Thanks Ziggy, I'll check that fuse after a hobbit breakfast and a srong coffee this morning. The code is P0135 and I have only that error persistent.

Before clearing the ECU errors i also had the following:

P0120 - Throttle potentiometer
U1601 - CAN message TX
U1600 - Electronic Key

Which now am ignoring. P.s. can I know which date (or how long ago) the codes have been generated ?

I've no idea: just give Mick the VIN number and you'll get the right one.

Dear friends and experts, I am still wondering on this fault. The symptom of a Lambda sensor going faulty is excessive fuel consumption, but my consumption is normal to slightly better from average. I was driving in Sicily (very little traffic in rural areas), reset mileage, mpg, etc. and drove 250km with 50mpg.... Now I am ordering a servo from Mick, and was wondering if I should buy a Lambda sensor or not (it will save a bit on postage/delivery). Can the lambda sensor error be a false positive error from CPU ?

I have just replaced both lambdas on my 16v, as I would get recurrent top lambda errors (which would clear for 200-300 miles, and then return); and then started getting more persistent bottom lambda errors (which would also clear: but then return with the top one...). All the time, my fuel consumption was only a little worse than I'm used to -- which, initially, I put down to the weather, and then a lazy stat; and which is why I kept clearing the codes....

Now I've replaced both lambdas (and the stat), my fuel consumption (although this is only with one tankful: so it's early days...) has gone down by around 10%...!

Moral of the story is that trying to spot the difference between a healthy lambda and a dying one, just by fuel usage, isn't that easy....

When the heater coil goes Open circuit - the car ignores that lambda sensor - as it thinks the sensor isn't warm enough to give a valid reason / reading

So reverts back to a preset map for injection based on other sensors

So it wont be miles out, whats worse is when the sensor is stuck saying - im lean, im lean, im lean
As a result the car pouring fuel in by the bucket load to get a richer mixture

But the Lambda been stuck due to failure - still says lean lean lean

Update... I bought a new lambda sensor but cant check the ecu codes at the moment.
