Hello there! My name is Michael Gooderham (Username: Mikeado). I am an 18-year-old petrolhead. Don't be mislead by my age though; I'm not into the whole all-show-and-no-go, loud-exhaust style of modifying that most teenagers are into and don't switch spontaneously between blasting sub-woofers and tree-hunting at 60mph+ during the night.

I got my first car (if you exclude the failed Mini "project" that never turned a wheel >_>) back in November '09. It's a peasant-spec 3dr Grande Punto 1.2 Active, in 'Crossover Black'. Peasant-spec as in the boggiest of bog-standard. But hey, it goes, stops and steers, so as a learner car it was fine :)

I passed on December 8th, and all the new-driver nerves have gone, meaning that I have got used to the sensation of speed. I thus want more

With me and fuel in the car, it weighs over 1100kg, and 64bhp means it's not exactly punchy, as hard as the eager little engine tries (well, eager compared to my instructor's Citroen C3 diesel, anyway!). I have thus decided to add the cheap-but-apparently-effective modification of a K&N 57i Induction Kit.

Instead of paying for someone else to do it, I decided, being a car person, to try my hand at fitting it myself. Unfortunately this solidified my fear that knowing about cars does NOT mean you know about engines. K&N supply instructions with photographs (in black and white >_>) to help, but I have still got stuck (which is my punishment, I suppose, for barrelling in un-prepared and expecting it to be dead easy). The problem is not knowing all the relevant bits - what they typically look like and where they are - so I have got so far on pictures and guessing (I have removed the air box assembly & vacuum hose), but now I'm in need of actual knowledge.

The main question is, it says to "Remove the air box feed pipe". Is that:
a) the plastic pipe connected to the air box assembly?
b) something lower down that goes into the very front of the car?
c) Neither of those things [it does mention a 'chassis leg support']?

My main problem is that I can't match the picture in the instructions to anything I can see, although the answer does now appear to be c) having thought a bit. But if it's neither of those (attached pics), where is it?

Your help would be much appreciated :D

Oh don't worry, it's not in any of those pics. It's a little rubber hose that went from the airbox to the back of the inlet manifold. As I've been instructed to remove said airbox, and the new K&N filter goes straight onto the inlet manifold, the vacuum hose doesn't seem all that useful.

Anyway, I'll post this query in the Grande Punto section like you suggested. (y)

Having the filter sat ontop of your engine will mean it sucks in warm air rather than cold air. thus loosing you power.

Really? Oh crumbs. :bang:

Apparently it gets cold air fed to it by a flexible hose. The pics there are from halfway through the process. Sorry if they're misleading. The full instructions pdf is on their website (knfilters . com/instructions/57-0655_inst.pdf). I can't post URLs yet because I'm too new. >_>

With that "Flexi-hose" sending cold air at it, will it actually be ok, or should I take your advice and get rid of it?

 OH WAIT!! I've worked it all out now:slayer:. Having the big colour pictures on the interweb and some time to think helped. I was just over-thinking what it meant. It all makes sense now. It just meant unclip the plastic pipe (pictured in the boot of Mum's Peugeot in the first comment) before taking it off along with the air box. Now I just need to put the filter on and route the "flexi-hose" from the grille to the filter.

That took FAR too long to work out! Thanks for causing me to look closer and think harder :D

regardless, you could have 10 cold air feeds and it wouldnt make this any better, its like blowing through a straw
Id definately look at either the focus induction kit that alot of members on here have or the GSR kit

Sure you will get a nicer sound but your not going to see any gains from this setup. I made this mistake on my last car

 :bang:

If the problem is the filter getting cold air from only a small area, would a cone or funnel or something to give cold air to more of the filter be any help at all?
