General England Flags !!!!

I see hundreds of flags in the street and on cars when there are rugby matches on...also for those sho dont like football turn off, you have PC's, x-boxes and sky tv thesedays so no excuse.

Hardly anybody complained at the jubilee & there was flags and bunting on just about every street. Why do people have to moan or have to have this hard man 'better not wave a flag here' image? 99.999% of the time we hate each another never even dreaming of saying hi in the street so whats wrong with a few weeks of everyone being a bit f*cking happier with a common goal (excuse the pun)

I tend to agree. My problem is more to do with football though. I think it's an apallingly huge waste of money.

But surely it's only 'wasting' the money of the people who pay to see it or support it....?

If you don't go to see it, or pay to watch it, or buy anything related to it, it won't be a waste of your money....

;)

Of course, but a lot of the supporters are not the most well off people and pay obscene amounts of money for tickets and clothing and support the teams in the misguided belief that the club is actually there for them and cares about them. I genuinely feel sorry for Mr Smith and his son who spend money they probably can't afford on club shirts which invariably change every year or two. Just doesn't seem right to me that these teams squeeze money out of these people. So they can do what? End up millions or even billions in debt?

I agree mostly, I cant afford to go to football with the kids infact I only know two person who regulary go to games. Players should be capped at £5K a week. Thing is players can generate huge amounts for clubs and are in some ways worth big wages in this respect but to earn more than doctors, nurses, lifeboat men, police etc just seems wrong. Players should want to play for their club not for sterling.

It's not compulsory though is it? Nobody's holding a gun to their head, if they can't afford it they shouldn't be buying. Same goes for anything.

Of course but you just know that some of these people have the silly belief that the club actually cares about the fans. So the person thinks they're doing something good for the club by sending the money their way but in the end all they do is put some extra money towards some 20 something inch spinners for some prettyboy striker's Cayenne or some money for him to give to his dopey bint of a girlfriend/wife so she can pay someone to ghostwrite her book for her. I've nothing against people making money or anything.......

Like t says, earning more than doctors? Than the PM for focks sake? For what? For occasionally scoring a goal or two and falling over melodramatically and grimacing with all your might till the ref cards the other guy who barely touched you?

I try the hardest at my job and I support the people who pick up your trash, (slowly) lay your local roads, take care of old folks and teach your children. Why should I work my butt off for what a premiership player will earn in something silly like half a week?

It goes beyond being a game though, if a team gets regulated it means a drop in income for the town/city. Being in the premiership means (for example) 20000 fans at 20 games 400000 fans during that year (please let my maths be right so I dont look like a total ****) now lets say those 400000 fans spend £10 on local food, drink etc thats 4million income every year. An amount of money welcome to any town/city in the UK.

Lets see how off topic we can get:)

But if not for the game I'm sure this money would get spent elsewhere in the economy. I would argue that with the luxuries and crap that overpaid players will buy this will send more money overseas ;)

I can't see how some tarty Footballer who ponces around on the floor like a little girl every time somebody puts an elbow near them, can possibly be worth more than one of our troops in Afghan/Iraq putting their lives on the line for our country for millions of pounds less?!

clubs up here become amateur if they get relegated resulting in players getting sold off or free transfers to save outgoings aswell as ground staff etc add to this falling ticket sales. Local shops near the ground struggle, coach companies get less bookings etc the knock on effect can be drastic for some.

I agree with the above as well. It's great when something brings people together - be it dramatic weather, rallying against/for a common cause or an international sporting event. I remember Euro 96 and the great spirit that was all around Birmingham [and other host cities].

Once I get home tonight, I'll be hanging a St. George's flag on our house (y)

I utterly agree! (y)

You know, it was an eye opener when I moved to Denmark. The Danes are very proud of their flag and fly it pretty much everywhere they can and why not! I think it's a great tradition. (y)

Now, if only we British were so proud. Sheesh. Nothing but a bunch of pathetic moaning wet teabags, we are. :p

I think our biggest problem is the associations many draw between our flag and other things/groups that we don't like (those that usually hijack the flag for their own cause).

Rather than us taking our flag and being proud of our nation.

Which, we aren't are we?

There was a documentary on telly years ago which looked at how people from different countries reacted to the same events.
The format was a group of people from each country 'won' a week's holiday in a hotel where they were filmed as a carefully controlled series of events were staged.

The hotel lobby had various flags-of-all-nations strung up and one of the events was that the guests came down one morning to find their flag had been burnt. The three (that I can remember) groups reacted very differently to this:

The Japanese were worried that they must have offended someone to make them want to burn their flag.

The Americans were outraged at the desecration of their flag. One woman wanted to take it back home and give it a decent burial or something.

The British. Well they didn't actually notice their burnt flag...
