i would never clean an engine with anything other than a cloth, use wd40 as a surface cleaner prior to wiping.

many places offer steam cleaning for the engine bay, i would rather eat my own face than let them do it to my car. electrical faults often occur after a steam clean because any cleaned bare metal will rust, especially electrical connections. dirt is better than rust, trust me.

Ive cleaned a lot of engines and never had any problems. As long as you dont spray the air filter and go easy on the fusebox etc, you shouldnt have any problems. Although many of these were Honda and toyota engines and maybe JUG knows somethin about these FIAT engines that i dont, but I did clean a punto engine & gearbow once.
theres nothing better than seeing that engine look like the day it was built.,.,

I wouldint like to clean it with steam as fiats aint to clever on the electrical part unlike honda and toyota i wouldint even dare go near the fusebox and ecu in the engine bay with steam cleaning when the engine is cold spray on some (TFR available at truck factors) its also good for the engine bay for removing oil ect.. Dont let it dry on paintwork as it leaves streaks that have to be polished out...

degreaser works very well but if you unsure of doing it then just take off pieces that you can clean one at a time.,
Back to black on the plastics,
Rocker cover and Exhaust manifold can be cleaned with a wire brush., it looks much better when it nice and clean, but steam should be ok as its controlable unlike if you where to use a pressure washer for instance!!!.,.,
