Technical Engine starts and then dies on first try

2003 2.8jtd. Ignition switch feels clunky and loose when turning the key. Ignition on, glow plug lights off, turn key and engine starts. Then switches off! Second attempt usually works okay.
I'm thinking this is an ignition switch / barrel issue? Has anyone had a similar issue?

Yep a few people have had the pin holding the gear that activates the switch come loose. Degrease pin and socket and stick it back in with red loctite.

Should I dismantle the barrel assembly to fix this?

Unclip the switch from the ignition casting and you will see the gear.
