Hi all, just had the engine in the JTD100 2001 replaced as it had had numerous seizures and valves were bent etc etc

Anyway, mechanic has put another JTD100 2001 in the bay which had 48k on (with a 3 month warranty).

Problem is the car fires once and doesnt keep running. It will do this every time you turn the key but wont keep running.

Mechanic had his friend out from fiat who plugged in a diagnostic machine and that said that the top dead centre pick up was faulty so the mechanic replaced it with the one off my old engine (btw 75K). Still no luck. Car turns but only fires once.

The friend from fiat then told the mechanic to check the valve timing again as if they are 1 tooth out they wont start. I have faith in the mechanic so i dont think its that and he says it shouldnt be that because it was spot on!....he's going to check anyway.

Anyway, has anyone had anything like this happen before? i really need to know what this niggle is because ive been without the bravo for 3 months and want her back before christmas!!

All help is seriously appreciated guys!

it wont have anything to do with the angel tune will it?

Stu

the angel tune just tells it to put more fuel in it and change the turbo settings....

the tune doesn't prevent the car from running....

know it sounds funny but does it have a hole in a fuel pipe or a blockage or just a pipe not on properly??

On a rover we had we changed some bits and it did the same... turned out the fuel pipe wasn't pushed on far enough so the pump filled the carb enough to start but then it'd just stop & only ran if u floored it.... the puddle of petrol gave us a clue wot was wrong ;)

I asked him the same thing!! He said it wasnt that :(

Im so disheartened with the car at the mo

Thanks for the response Tommy

When it fires does it run properly for a few seconds ?. And what happens if you keep it on the starter ?. Is the fuel pump running properly ?

Owen.

I will have to ask, he just said it fires once then stops, evrytime the key is turned.

I personally think it is an electrical connection as i cant see things like pumps being broken on an engine with less than 50k

Although!!! i know little so more help the better!!

Thanks

Stu

Could be the crank sensor if can have symptoms like that... starts sounds rough then cuts out.

Family: Punto JTD ELX 2001 - Met Red - Volvo S40 2.0 TS 2002 - Red
Old: Brava 80sx 1999 - Red - Punto 60sx 1997 - Red

Spoke to mechanic, he's still baffled.

He has bled the fuel system "properly" and changed the top dead centre pick
up...nothing. Fuel pump he thinks is fine and connections all sound.

The car turns once when the key is turned. If you keep it turned nothing
further happens. If you take out the key and put it back in, the car again
turns once then nothing further.

He says the immobiliser light is going off as per normal

Any more thoughts guys?

Thanks all

Stu

Thats different fault to the first one.

Duff starter if it just turns one revolution then stops.

does the car fire.. of does it turn over just once.

there is a difference!

right had a look through the search function and have come up with these possibilities:

Diesel filter blocked?

Heater coil fuse?

Crankshaft sensor (already mentioned)

Fuel cut off button depressed?

Air getting in fuel line?

Return pipes dodgy between injectors?

Seal on fuel filter?

Are these possibilities people?

Thanks

well the reason why it's important to find out if it "fires" or just "turns over" once.

My JTD would take the engine to atleast turn over 4 times before it would fire.

now the engine should turn over, and over and over & if there was a fuel problem then it just wouldn't fire or start.

If the engine doesn't keep turning over then there is a serious fault i would say.. summit is bent, preventing the engine from turning.... is the timing correct?? can the engine be turned over by hand??

well my mechanics off til 27th now so i cant probe any further but would i need to start the car with the red key first time after the engine change? would that have anything to do with it?

Stu

No, the red key is only used to program new blue keys, it does nothing else useful.

If the CODE light goes out then all is happy.
