on my punto i have started to get a small oil leak, it doesn't leave much oil on the floor, there is no oil in the water or vice versa, and i don't get any white smoke from the exhust. would it just be the gasket cover or could it still be the head gasket, oil can be seen low to the left hand side and down the back too running from an high point.

From those it looks like the rocker cover gasket to me...it depends if the leak starts at the join between the cover on the top of the engine and the block...which isn't that clear on the photos of the front of the engine... my old 55 had a leak from there ....it was nowt serious used about a litre of oil every 2k...getting it fixed cost about 20 quid if i remember right...cos the part is about 5 quid tops and its not a hard job so mechanics bills aren't extortionate as long as you avoid fiat, tbf if it aint losing much put a bottle of oil in your boot check it each week and fill when necessary....

As said above probably the rocker gasket needs replacing you can get this in a moterfactor shop but the fiat ones are better quality and a little thicker i would buy one of them and get someone to fit it if you dont want to, looks like an MK2 engine to me, the 8v are common to go alot more than the 16v..

yea its a Mk2 1.2. i think i may of solved the one at the back, i replaced the beathe pipe thingy which was not fitting too well and had started cracking, it seems the front one is still going. The leak appears to be starting just under the 3 exhust pipes.

Yeah it does look like leak is starting there, but looks like its coming from the side of rocker cover (top of engine) and looks like its running down between the cambelt cover (drivers side) and engine and running out and appearing just below the front exhaust, im guesing when car is parked up overnight at home theres no oil on ground if you have a look, thats probably cause it will only leak a little when engine is running just keep an eye on your oil level though..

rocker cover gasket fiat part is 9 quid also if you want to try fitting it yourself it is realy easy only 4 bolts hold the rocker cover on you will have to remove the air filter housing and engine harness along the back of it 2 clips and also one bolt in from the end holding the top of the cam belt covermake sure you put a glob od black silicone at the corners of the gasket were it goes up and over the cam shaft bearings as it leaks here if you dont

i had the same problem, it looks like it is the rocker cover gasket

cheers, gonna have a look at that at the weekend as its bank hols :)

Yesterday when I opened the bonnet I was horrified to see oil all over the engine. Thank god for this posting! Got it sorted this morning and not being particulary mechanical minded it was very rewarding getting the job done. The Haynes manual was useless! It does not mention at all there is a harness at the back of the cover - luckily I knew from here that there were two clips...although to find and undo them was a little more tricky thanks to wonderfully designed layout *coughs*. :bang: In the end I ended up breaking both of them (by accident). Does it matter if the harness is no longer connected down to the cam/rocker cover?

I have the same problem .. my engine looks the same as the above photos (oil in the same place) .. have just been quoted £29 inc vat from 2 garages to replace the rocker gasket.

I think I'll take one of them up on it as I don't have mucb spare time to do it myself.. would be interesting to do though.. and looks simple enough.

Change the top cover (rocker cover / cam cover) gasket. I did mine yesterday took 10 minutes and cost 6 quid ( didnt buy a new gasket, just bought gasket sealer to seal where the gasket was broken)
