First of all hi to everyone here.

I have a 1988 Uno FIRE that when I 'step on it' on 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear instead of the expected acceleration I get some clinking sound. It still accelerates (though not what I would expect from it, as in much slower).

I am in the process of replacing the spark bulbs when I manage to get the old ones out as they seem like almost welded in place.

I changed the clutch recently so I don't think that is the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the tappets or the valve clearances.

I'd suggest taking it into a garage and getting them to have a look at it.

This sounds like 'pinking'/ 'pre-detonation' or pre-ignition:

Most likely cause is the ignition timing is incorrect. Other possible causes are a failed distributor vacuum diaphragm, incorrect/ damaged spark plugs or poor quality fuel (too low octane rating). Get these checked first and I suspect you'll find the root cause of your problem. (y)

I agree with what Chas said... it's quite likely that the vacuum advance capsule on the distributor has failed (has a hole) and someone has advanced the ignition timing (by rotating the distributor on its mounting) to compensate. The engine idles smoothly but when the load goes on, you get the tinkling (which is bad for the engine). Probably the solution is a new vacuum advance capsule (test the old one by pulling the pipe off and refitting with the engine running - idle speed should change) followed by setting of the ignition timing using a timing light - set to 5 degrees BTDC (middle notch on gearbox bellhousing above clutch).

I have a spare distributor from a previous uno I had. Would changing the whole thing do the trick? I suppose so, and is it hard to set the timing right?

Spark plugs aren't the problem as I put on a new set yesterday and still the same. I had a friend try to correct the timing of the distributor but nothing. I doubt it's the fuel as everyone else speeds past me (even other unos)

Thanks

Check the vacuum diaphragm first as they're a common failure. No point in swapping the distributor for one that also has a failed diaphragm or if yours is fine.

The timing is easy to set but needs to be set dynamically with a timing/ strobe light. It must also be set with the vacuum advance pipe disconnected at the distributor end and plugged.

Good luck. :)

Excuse my ignorance but where is the vacuum diaphragm? I know the distributor but not that.
