Hi guys, just wondering how many miles do you think the 1.2 8v engine will last?its my first FIAT a friend of mine says that the cheaper FIAT engines are not made to have long lifespans.

... a friend of mine says ...

That engine has a history going back some 25 years – & on-going. Before your `friend’ was born, before he was skateboard correspondent for his school mag, & certainly long before he was qualified (or not?) to comment on auto engine design.

Now I guess it’s uncertain how many of the 9? 10? … million assembled were the 1.2/8v version & are still in service – but perhaps your `friend’ could `foxtrot off’ & do a survey.

I expect your 1.2/8v will have a long history – & longer if you don’t give friends like that a lift.

The 1.2 8-valve engine is a FIRE unit, if memory serves me right. My Fiat Uno mk1 did 130k miles and was still running sweet, bodywork was too rusty though. The engine was transplanted to a uno mk2 (its original engine was running on 3 cylinders due to lack of maintenance), the engine did an additional 55k miles before being sent to the scrapyard. Still, the engine was running properly, bodywork was too rusty and beyond economical repair. FIRE units are pretty much bomb-proof, so long as you maintain them. The only cases of a Grande Punto 1.2 breaking down in when people put 17" wheels and rag the poor thing, where gearbox gives up first and then the engine. Treat your car right and it will reciprocate accordingly.
