Well now that the 20vt idea is completely out of the picture, I got in this afternoon, and as the bravo had been stood for most of the week decided to do an oil, filter and plugs change as I had spares in the garage.
Took the cover off to do the plugs first and unscrewed the ht lead/block, and out it came with a load of oil!!!!!!
All the other 4 plug holes are fine, just the one nearest to the oil filler cap! So i took off the rocker top (after figuring out how to disassemble the bracket bolted to the side of the rocker cover)and used a syringe and a thin pipe to get all the oil out of the plug well.
Looks like it's been leaking in through the seal on the rocker round the plug hole, so off to fiat tomorrow for a set of 5 and a new rocker gasket.

Question is............

Does anyone know what the correct torque settings are for the rocker cover bolts?

Want to make sure it's right as i've got a trip down to birmingham in a week or two to have the cambelt done, and the last thing I need is a problem on the way down........

Also, does anyone know how tight the cambelt should be between the two pullies that come off the cams at the top? Mine seemed quite slack. Does the hgt have a hydraulic tensioner that only works when the engine is running, or a manual adjustable one?

Cheers in advance.

definitely torque them up correctly- i cracked my rocker cover with very little pressure :(
just wondered- is it best to warm the rocker cover up first (soft metal = less brittle) or does it make no difference?

Unfortuantely the Haynes doesn't cover the 2.0 but the porters manual does but again theres no mention of the 2.0 engine for the cylinder head.

Ok as a rough guide it states on the 1.8 16V, tighten teach bolt to 20NM then a second stage tighten to 40NM. On a diesel its tighten to 20NM then second stage to 30NM.

Also a tip they state is...

No not use cylinder bolts more than three times, replace if in doubt.

The cylinder head bolts must be cleaned, dipped in engine oil and drained for thirty minutes before refitting. This stops them 'hydraulicing' when being screwed home and allows them to be 'torqued' down evenly.

Isnt there a correct order to tighten them down in as well, or am I misled?

thanks joske, good info.
Wouldn't have thought that the bolts will ahve to be tightened in a sequence as it's only a rocker cover and not the head bolts, but there should be a correct torque setting as you stated.
Gonna be a couple of days before I can re-fot it anyway as gotta get on the phone to fiat in the morning and order the bits I need.

May replace the bolts yet, not really decided as they look okay, but i'm no mechanic!

Probably better to be safe rather than sorry!

Cheers
