I have the Engine Control Faulty light on my Multipla come on but I'm not sure if it may have been caused by something I have done, Its a 1.9 JTD.

I just changed the gearbox and put the battery back in so I thought I would reconnect it but unfortunately I forgot I had left the key in the ignition at MAR so I was able to turn the steering wheel. Of course, everything that was switched on came back on and the alarm went off.

At that point I hadn't connected the air flow meter, the thermostat sensor and the electronic component that has the tube from the turbo waste gate attached to it (sorry, I don't know what its called!!).I disconnected the battery again, removed the key and continued to finish off connecting everything else that I hadn't done so far. I started her up for the first time and she ran sweet and still does, although its up on the axle stands at the moment so I can't tell what its like under load but the engine revs freely.

I have had no problems with my Multipla whatsoever, its a 2001 with 125000 miles on the clock. Its never had the engine warning light on before either and I have had the gearbox out before when I did the clutch but never got any warnings after that. Does the ECU remember faults and keep the light on or should it go off after a few engine cycles like a lot of Fiats and Alfa's I have had before? I have had a look at the historic threads on the Forum about this but I'm not sure if its cos of me connecting the battery with the ignition on and the components I listed disconnected.

Any thoughts???

I'm sure that the ECU will flag a fault with one or more of those items disconnected, the ECU will reset itself if the error does not re-occur so you shouldn't have a problem.
I believe the ECU has to see 3 consecutive errors before it logs the fault as permanent.

My light has now gone off, of its own accord. I hope yours does too; momoe's message sounds encouraging.

Thanks Bloog, glad to hear yours is ok now, lets hope it stays that way. I gave my car its second cycle tonight when I got home. I took it up to running temperature and switched off, I'll do the same again tomorrow and see what happens after that. I can't drive it yet cos its on axle stands but it is certainly running very well, like it always has and its now very pleasant to be able to select a gear !!!!

I think sometimes Fiat make the sensors too sensitive !!!!!
