That's why coolant tanks are translucent so you can see through the side to check the level without opening them up and scalding yourself.....

Agreed, but the link between checking and topping up and the temptation to do so would be far too great.

I really don't think any car company would be prepared to take this risk for absolutely no reason at all.

That's why there are warnings on radiator caps not to remove the cap when the engine is hot.
