hi

i currently have a cinquecento sporting but the engine has died on me, instead of fixing it i want more power.
i have been looking at the mini 1275 gt and the renault 5 gt turbo engine, but because i have little experience im not sure wether they will fit with alot of work.
can anyone help or suggest something else.

thanks

Hey welcome to the forum.

The turboing of a cento is a question that comes up a lot, more suprising than you would think. It may be best to pop down to the cento section and have a sift through the turbo threads. (y)

A tuned 1242 engine which is an easier swap can be seen by some as a better alternative and more reliable route to go, again a good search will give you some ideas

You also need to consult the cost element of this engine swap, not only for the project but for insurance. If you are under 21 years old or do not have a lot of NCB forget about trying to insure it

You can expect the project to run into thousands. One member spent over 18k turboing his seicento by the time the project was finished and sold.

Im not sure if either of the engines mentioned will fit, i have a feeling the renault one is a probable no no as you will loose all handling of the cinq due to the weight at the front dont know about the mini one, there are other engines in the fiat range you can choose from however if you so prefer but again once a search will come up with ideas

Being a new member some of the more established members can frown upon your questions about turboing a cento . This is because we get a lot of 'dreamers' who post about doing the conversions and never return with updates nor present any evidence of progress, i hope this is not the case here also.

However which ever route you decide please make sure you have some funds available.

Look forward to hearing about your progress with this project

hi

I can totaly understand were you are coming from with the dreamer thing, but i am very dedicated, driving my cinq since i passed well over a year and a half ago now and loving everything about it.
im also studying motorsport engineering in september at uni so am desperate to get a project car going.
insurance on a car like that is totaly out of the question with my age and only 1 years no claims, so would want to use it as a track car, not going to be cheap i know but well worth it.
about the contribution part i have done abit of work to the outside of my car such as rounding off the bumpers, dtm exhaust, tinted lights and windows, de-badged and i have recently stripped out the whole interior, and will get some pictures on very soon.

thanks for the advice,
very appreciated

I too did a motor degree at uni and if, like me, you have the choice of doing any type of project for your final exam, this may be the project to do :)

The 1275GT lump puts out approx 70bhp IIRC - I know the MG Metro (same lump bar a couple of slightly different things, e.g. cam) was rated at 72bhp.

IMO, the A series would be a step backwards - A series 5 speed boxes are 4 figures to buy new, if you can find them (the only recent supplier I know of was Jack Knight Developments and I'm 99% certain they've stopped building them). The lump would probably need a thorough rebuild too. You can get 72bhp out of a 1108 FIRE for much less cash and effort (and even less for a 1242) - have a search on here or look at the FAQs :)

The problem with fitting larger engines is the extra weight over the front - this can be detrimental to the handling. The UT engine can and has been fitted, but it'll need lots of time and money spent on getting it set up properly.

Turboing the FIRE will extract a 4 figure sum from your account - I've looked into it before, and stopped when I hit an estimate of 1500 - 2K (which included everything required including oil cooler, remote oil filter, intercooler, RR setup time, etc etc.) Not trying to put you off, but just warning you that it can be relentless on denting your wallet.

Have a search anyway - engine conversions from relatively simple and cheap to very involved (and expensive!) have been covered before :)
