I was bowling down M6 a month ago (Eleganza 1.9 JTD) with 275 miles on the clock when 'beep' and up comes the disconcerting message 'engine control faulty - contact garage'. Loss of power but limped into Liverpool (warning light remained on) and dealer diagnosed 'Particulate regeneration - clogged filter'. At <300 miles ? What rubbish have I just bought ? Dealer sorted it - don't know what they actually did but some 600 miles later a repeat performance, with loss of power. Different dealer ( different town) plugs in the box of tricks and gets 'no error' message. Well clearly there is an error, otherwise there wouldn't be the message on the dashboard display nor the glowing light and the loss of power. Dealer tries to replicate the fault ( the box of tricks having cleared the warning message etc from the in-car computer - or so I'm told) but can't and doesn't know the answer. Now do I set off on a planned 150 mile trip in 2 weeks time and trust to luck or do I say to Mr Fiat "this car is unreliable, here's the keys"? There is too much reliance on the electronic gadgetry these days - 'the computer says ...' but you can't ask the darned computer a direct question.
Yes, you've guessed it - I'm a grumpy old man ,but I've just parted with rather a lot of hard-earned money on a car which should be capable of 'doing what it says on the tin'. Anyone had a similar problem with this model, please and any advice as to what I can suggest to the dealer to help him to make a diagnosis.
