Panda (Classic) Engelbert the H reg Dark Green Sisley Progress Log

Introduction

https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-cla...ng-h-reg-sisley-needs-home-5.html#post3514984

So today I took delivery of the above mentioned Sisley, who I have decided to name Engelbert after the last 3 letters of his numberplate (I always name my cars in this way). All is explained as to how he came to be in my possession from the above thread so I wont touch on that too much here but will say the seller is a very kind lady. She was understanding about the transport frustrations I had and was very honest about the condition of the car.

This first post is going to be very pic heavy by the way!! I got it and did a quick assessment (I will do a more in depth assessment tomorrow) but I am extremely pleased with the condition generally, it obviously will need work but I am prepared for this (hence the project log). It has every sisley extra apart from the grille badge and is missing two centrecaps and the horn push (I am not counting the compass in this), though I wasnt expecting there to be as much of the sisley trim etc as there is! I am in the process of compiling a list of required items too.

Required Items/work required

Side repeater indicator
Front part of Airbox assembly (or new clips)
two sisley centrecaps
Front grille sisley badge
Instrument surround (See photo)
possibly bonnet vent (there is a small crack in this but I actually dont think it matters too much)
Possibly new bonnet or just work to the bonnet
Rubber headlamp rear cover
Rubber boot seal
Refurbish wheels and new tyres
Sisley Horn Push
New Battery
Aerial
Wiring repairs (wiring next to battery at least)
Repair front seat fabric
Under bonnet screwdriver
wirebrushing and undersealing, possible welding at points
Front bullbars
rear bullbars Palio I havent forgotten about this, but will wait till funds are more available if thats cool?
Obviously a stripdown and recommissioning generally of the engine is required as it hasnt run in 4-5 years

The general condition is pretty good indeed, though some rust curing and prevention will obviously have to be done. But I gave it a quick clean and it has come up very nicely, I am struggling for things to say about it as I have so much swimming in my head at the moment with it, im overwhelmed, need to sleep to digest it all! I will let the pictures and videos do the talking (still need to upload videos)
So set up an auxillary tank today to check the operation of the fuel pump. It pumps but seems to load a lot, and looks like it is flowing straight through, which shouldn't really happen as far as I am aware? So I will be looking for a good second hand one after payday.

However after checking for spark on all four spark plugs, checking inside and cleaning the distributor cap I tried starting it. It started after a couple of false starts :)

As I said earlier in the thread I thought the radiator was likely to be leaking, and it is indeed leaking at the edges. Not surprised though and have replaced the radiator on PTP so not worried about it :)

Got the new Indicator fitted to the passenger side which looked oddly bare before, thanks go to AndyPanda4x4 for sending the part to me :)

Didn't get to cleaning the carb and tank yet, but there is only so much time in the day, and I am not going to rush things for fear of making mistakes and causing damage. Better to do it to the very best of my ability, this car deserves no less.

As a last side note has anyone seen the cover which covers the windscreen air vents before? Just wondering if they are standard to the sisley?

Don't forget the pump is mechanical so just pumps constantly with engine revs, When the engine's not under load and drawing less fuel the float chamber in the carb stays more or less full, needle valve closes up, so most of the fuel the pump is pumping is released back through the return pipe to ease the pressure. I assume that's what you're meaning by 'straight through', the fuel's coming straight back out through the third tube on the pump? if so, perfectly normal.

Seen them before, came on the Supers certainly and yes I'm pretty sure Sisleys had them too.

No, I'm referring to the pipe which feeds the carb, even when the engine wasn't on. The needle valve is supposed to close up then?

Yes needle valve is what regulates the flow into the carb but that's inside the body of the carb & only closes when the float chamber is full. It sounds like it's all working OK to be honest, if the needle valve wasn't closing up then your carb would flood when you tried to run the engine & it sounds fine on that count. If you're worried about the pump then put the temp tank back below the level of the carb , disconnect the fuel pipe from the carb and turn the engine over with your nice starter to see if the pump will pull uphill and chuck some petrol through. Maybe then leave the tank attached and see if the petrol stays put rather than draining back down overnight. If all that checks out, pump's fine.

Thanks man :)

haha you got it running, and nice too! well done!
bit of clutch bearing chatter, but mine does that even after the bearing and clutch was replaced.. nothing to worry about.

yeah good job.. as carbs go that started really good. that was not the first start though surely?! it really did start well.

think of the pump as having 2 return lines.. only one goes into the carb.. super low pressure.
if the fuel pump "sucks" then you know its good.

check ans see if the vac advance on the distributor is all fine, pull the pipe off and with a bit of other pipe connected to it, suck on the pipe and see if you can pull a vacuum.. if you get no resistance then it will need replacing.
the one on Talon was shot.. as was the one on Johns (panda panda's) Sky panda.
sounded good so it may be fine :D

hmm.. yeah sounds good. soon be ready for its MOT then?!
you'll love it when the snow comes thats for sure!

Great advice once again thanks John :)

As far as the MOT goes there is still a LOT to do before it will be capable of getting a ticket, not least of which is completely redoing all the brakes and fluid, a new radiator and all the welding which is required.

If I had enough money the actual bare minimum work to get an MOT wouldn't take all that long I don't think, but I can only do so much a month due to budget (n)

Saying that December might not be that unrealistic.

ahh i see.. i didnt think that much needed doing :/

get the welding done first then move on the the brakes and running gear.. the rest i just call cosmetics lmao.

how bad is the rad? i would of offered bex's one as that was brand new.. but fallout has claimed that.. fallouts old rad has no leaks but it looks really tired.
some places can just re-core the rads. i had talons done like that.
i think that 4x4 rads can be hard to come by but from what i remember they take the same core as the mk 1 puntos :D

The joins are very corroded, with a lot of crystallisation.

I am going to check ebay nearer the time, but when I ordered the one for ptp from Germany I am almost certain that they had 4x4 ones, hopefully they do :)

Removed the bonnet yesterday, the air vent is slightly cracked but is useable, the front of the bonnet is full of filler which has bubbled up, so I will be on the lookout for one of those in the same colour, if anyone sees a dark green Sisley breaking give me a shout! Failing that I will just have to buy another bonnet and have it resprayed. Need the tailgate too for the same reason. I will keep an eye out because I still have time.

Also I found the correct radiator on eBay, its a little too pricey for my liking so I have contacted the seller to see if he can do me a deal, it is something I need though so might just have to get it.

So after I contacted the seller on ebay with the following message:

Hi there,

I don't want this to sound cheeky but could you please offer me a discount on this radiator? In return I will be happy to advertise your company on my Youtube series, "Fiat Panda Sisley 4x4 Restoration Progress Log" (I cant post links on ebay, but my name is Cameron Thomson and the youtube channel is called that too) I have over 950,000 views on my videos as you will see from my analytics and I have 208 subscribers. I have bought many items from you over the last 5 years and have always been more than happy with the products and service. I am happy to wear badges, display posters etc in my weekly updated videos, as well as clothing etc if required. (size XL)

Please consider my offer as this arrangement would be mutually beneficial.

Many thanks

Cameron Thomson

They contacted me today and offered to send me the radiator for cost price if I mention them in the video and wear the clothing they are going to send me. I am happy with this because it will make my videos look more professional which may help me net more views and subscribers. Also I am getting the radiator cheaper! :)
