I have now experienced the following problem twice within the last 14 days.

Prior to the 2 overnight trips, the camper has been sitting unused in our driveway, and both times it started flawlessly.

Situation 1.

Departure from our home on a Thursday morning.

Overnight stay 70 km away.

Drive again the next morning, and have a few visits in the area, which is why the car drives a few short trips. This without any problems.

In the afternoon we drive back to our home. A few km. Before we are home (after about 70 km) we stop at a red light. When we are about to start, the engine goes out. The ignition is fully on and all the lights work. But the car “dies” as if there was no power. Can only be started using a jump start with a booster.

Later in the afternoon I try to start again, and the car starts without any problems.

Situation 2.

About 14 days after the above.

Same pattern.

Departure from our home on Friday afternoon.

Drive about 25 km. To a place to stay.

Camp for the night, and drive home the following morning.

After about 20 km., we make a short stop to shop, where the car is idling.

When I have to start again, the exact same situation as above happens.

I get jump start again and can drive the last 2 km. home.

Later after dinner I try to start again, and the car starts without problems.

The same applies here the next day, which can start without problems.

I have in the last few weeks read a thread on another forum, where the vehicle was failing after long trips. Smart alternator was delivering too low a voltage on long runs, and battery was discharging. Diagnosis was assisted by using a voltmeter plugged into the cigarette lighter socket. Battery was dropping as low as 11.9V.

For details see here. Does that seem smilar to your problem?
