ok, is it just me, or is there some special way removing the two hex bolts on the pipe underneath?

im trying all sorts, hex in a socket etc, and i cant budge it and there isnt much room, any tips??

Try and wear like a finger less glove as your hand will get messy. Well mine does as I have big hands. The pipe under Neath is connected further down to a small pipe with only a o clamp on it, that is how I get it off

ah ha! right i saw that, ill try do it that way, cheers buddy!

p.s., too late about the hands :/ !!

chaps, i need some quick advice if possible?

got the EGR off, started to take it apart, found the valve bit closed as it should be, but coked thick. so i think it may have been sticking as after a bit of a clean, it would open but was sticky, and after a full clean, opens/closes freely.

now, the solenoid bit. I noticed a threadon here that suggested that if the little pin does not "spring" back out when pushed, its buggered, can someone confirm? Mine pushes in, and seems to stick. I can pull it back out by hand, but no springyness is there!

what can i do? fit a new solenoid, or an entire new egr, even though i am blanking it off?!

Blank it off or get a new EGR it's your choice, morally speaking diesel fumes (particulates) are soon likely to be classified in the same bracket as asbestos (carcinogens) if that bothers you.
Personally I find a quick blast every week keeps the EGR clean, haven't touched mine in 7 years.

thanks all. Well, ita taken me ages, what with being on call for work and other things happening today. I found it fiddly, but easy, and i think a new set of fiddly-proof tools are in order. Worst jobs was trying to loosen the bolts on the underside where the pipe meets the egr-had to remove from the bottom where the pipe meets the engine, but it was this clip that was a pain to tighten when i put it all back together-just not quite the right tools!!

ok, the pipes were black as youd expect, the egr itself seemed black but not coked up, i removed the solenoid and bam! shed loads of dusty blackness. spent a while cleaning it all, getting the egr valve to move/spring freely, and cleaned up the solenoid as best i could-although it doesnt spring, im not sure if its supposed to?

anyhoo, blanked off one pipe (although I intend on buying a new egr valve this year as I love planet Earth) and put it all back. Started her up, all seemed ok, went round the back and the exhaust has spat out a nice huge black splodge of dark matter.

Took the car up to the Total garage, purchased £45 of excellium diesel and some STP injector cleaner, and lads, i gotta say, its made a massive difference!

I couldnt detect the "flat" spot, revs were much more free and "cleaner", putting my foot down didnt expell a cloud of black smoke, so its looking good. AND, even though I only drove about 1.5 miles in total, my MPG counter has decided my economy is now 50Mpg, and thats up from high twenties...JOB WELL DONE, im well chuffed!!!(y)

Same here, car feels loads better after cleaning and blanking of the EGR but I used Forte injection cleaner.

This is the EGR of our Multiwagon, gave it a quick clean before I blanked it off. Made sure the Venturi tubes where clear, you can see them towards the end of the vid.

thanks for that, Shadeyman. My solenoid doesnt spring and click like yours. with mine being blanked off now...does it matter??

went for a longer drive today, MPG's had dropped yesterday but i expected that due to only driving local. MPG's just went up, up and up. When I got back home, afetr about 5 or 10 miles country drive, got 47MPG, whihc is more than twice what I got out of my old Mazda and my 4x4, so im well chuffed.

Zero smoke out the back (as far as I can see), and I can set off in second gear now, drive at lower speed in third and have power to take off again without dropping a gear, which i didnt have before, so I am really pleased.

seems to me, that doing the EGR job, be it cleaning/blanking or replacing, is a must-do job for anyone really, what a difference. in fact, im going to get it done on my 4x4 soon as well, been meaning to do it for years...!

When I blanked off my faulty EGR valve as a test, my mechanic friend revved up the car and all this black stuff shot out the exhaust too.

Sounds like you've got it sorted now mate nice one (y) So with your new MAF and blanked off (and maybe a new EGR valve), your flat spot has gone. I'm the other way round.....I have a new EGR valve and a suspected faulty MAF! So a new MAF could also eliminate my flat spot. Top job(y)

It wont effect the engine as its now blanked off but it may cause an error to be logged in the future so the EML may come one. If you get chance remove the solenoid and free it. I used a little WD40 and a pair of pliers on my daughters Stilo to free it, no problems afterwards.

ah yes, I did clean it with electrical contact cleaner and wd40 to the point where it is free, its just not springy!! so long as its sort for a little while, i intend getting a new one anyway later this year.

yup, huge black splodge of crap, quite shocking.

i reckon so Phil, if you want to borrow my MAF (original Bosch, just need to finish cleaning it) you can do, to see if it fixes the issue? I'm only in Huddersfield....
