will i damage the ecu by just unplugging it? Or do i need to disconnect the battery 1st?

shouldnt do. but it only take 5 secs to remove battery earth first so may as well be safe an do it

aye - only asked, because I'd quite like to be able to lock and alarm my car while it's ecu-less...

unplug battery, remove ecu, connect battery 
Then you can lock the car and alram it
Later unplug battery, refit ecu, connect battery

Settled for - unplug battery, lock doors manually, pray noone breaks in in the meantime
