DVLA computer - how long?

If I were to insure my car today, how long would it take for the DVLA computer to be updated.. i.e. when could I buy my tax online?

Are there any minimum times the insurance companies have to work to?

Managed to get the info out of the company... 20 days! Looks like I'll be getting the tax the traditional way.

20 days to update a computer record! So be careful when driving around on the first 3 weeks of your policy - according to the police computer you don't have insurance! Worth keeping a copy in the car incase you're stopped.

Hmmm last time I added a temporary driver Direct Line said the system is updated pretty quickly and the police would be able to see it within 24 hours. They still of course send out papers incase a producer is raised against you.

I'm assuming 20 days is for new polices, I can't see changes to existing polices takes that long to get updated!

i would think they quote the longest time so you cant moan is it done yet etc

It takes up to 3 months to remove the record too! . I got pulled by the cops in my Alfa and it came up registered as the last owner and insured by the last owner too two weeks after buying it and sending of the new owner leaflet. So does take a while unfortunately.

I like the idea of the police knowing that your car is mot'd and insured without needing any documents, but I have heard of cases where it wasnt on the system and they have impounded the car until documents are produced.
