I need some advice please. Is a wheel bearing change on a 2005 2.3 jtd a diy project or is it a dealer task. I@m in Spain at the moment and have a very noisy o/s front bearing .Are any special tools needed. I have general tools but not the socket for drive shaft 41mm I think, but have a wheel bearing removal kit
Any advice welcome

The only DIY part of this if you have the tools is the removal of the hub which you can then take to a garage with the necessary equipment to remove the old bearing with a hydraulic press, and by the same token inserting the new replacement.

I have had all the wheel bearings done at one time or another at least once, best to do in pairs, the fronts go first, its all due to the heavy constant load levels on a motorcaravan, usually at least 40,000 miles.
Best left to the garage I think in case things go wrong, its only a couple of hours for them.

Not exactly a side-of-the-road prospect, but I live in Spain and can warn you to keep well away from main agent type of repairers. A back street spanner-man in a small village will be your best bet for a good job done at a fair price. Some will happily fit secondhand spares if they know of any nearby.

The Spanish are quite good mechanics as a rule, a tradition which developed during the Franco period when things were costly and hard to get, so old cars had to be kept going long after their time was up.

Secondhand spares are freely available from the many scrappers, and usually come cleaned off, checked for suitability and ready to fit. You would be looking for a complete hub assembly. Only thing is, secondhand wheel bearings are a chancy buy as you can't hear them droning if worn, until you finish the job.
