General Ducato 2.8 jtd air con compressor

I am told that the bearings have gone on my air con compressor fitted to a 2.8 JTD (2002 reg.). Can the bearings be easily replaced or are we talking megabucks. Also, can the compressor be easily disconnected, as we do not use it at all (this is in a HYMER motorhome) or would this mess up the onboard electronics? Any help would be appreciated.
