I think my oil pump is on its last legs. Nasty rattly bearing noise there seems to be worst coming from the engine side of the oil filter.
How to confirm it and is this a garage workshop job or a reasonable DIY job.
Or could it be something else?

You will probably have a hard job finding garages competent to undertake that job these days due to the age, most don't seem to even fit a cambelt on those Sofim engines without destroying them a few miles down the road reading some of the comments from Forum members with camper vans!
My advice would be to try and locate an old engine of the same engine Series and swap the whole block over if in good order, they were used in many vehicles an makes if you check wikipedia etc.
Note if you use Iveco or other rwd versions the lower engine block is different so not able to make use of all parts on one of those engines for other parts.
Good time to change the cambelt also if careful.
There is downloads on Forum with more pdf.s to show it. :)

Not wholy relevant because they relates to a common rail engines, but as an illustration of what is involved I attach procedures relating to both Fiat and Iveco versions of the 2.8jtd. (The Iveco diagrams are clearer.) Please note that before carrying out major work on the auxiliary unit It has to be removed from the vehicle, which involves removing the timing and auxiliary belts.
