Hi guys just joined up as this looks to be the best Fiat related forum, just recently bought this 2002 yeat Ducato based motorhome and want to make sure it's fit to travel when restriction allow!

My 2002 Ducato has a noticeable whine when reved slightly or when driving or maybe best desribed as a whirring noise, just had the timing belt and water pump done and the mechanic said there were no noisey pulleys on the aux belt? It seems it starts when engine has warmed up, I think I might need to record the noise unless anyone has experienced this? If I rev a bit harder I can hear the turbo whistle which sounds normal.

Thanks Ronnie

Hi Ronnie

Could be the Aux belt itself..
Or the alternator..

If you unload the tensioner and remove the belt..
Let it run again

Thats a Yes : No for a lot of parts ;)

Will save you hours of part swapping :)

Thanks for that, when the garage is open again I will ask him to do that, I had hoped he would check that out when he was doing the timing belt! I did make him aware of the noise when I dropped it off.

When I collected it I was dissapointed the noise was still there! I had hoped the belt kit with pump would cure the noise, mechanic rekons it was coming from the back of the engine!

Thanks Ronnie

Thanks again, yes that's the best plan, I just hope it's not the turbo!

Another oddity I noticed at times when I did give it some revs it seemed to keep reving after I let go the pedal? As in a delay it going back to idle?

Thanks Ronnie

Sorry for the late update! I just this morning removed the V belt and the whine noise remains! I used the long screwdriver trumpet test held it against the fuel pump and it seems to be that making the noise, holding it near the turbo no noise.

Not sure if failure of the pump is coming? If it does could it lock up and destroy the belt, pumps are expensive! Could it be repaired?

All advice and experience welcome

Thanks Ronnie

When timing belt replaced was the torsional vibration damper replaced with a brand new one from a known good manufacturer?

Sorry I'm not even sure what that is? Flywheel pulley? But a full gates kit was fitted, belt, waterpump, tensioner and pulley.

Thanks Ronnie

Edit just checked it is the pulley, it makes the same noise with no belt on the pulley

Torsional vibration damper is integral with the crank pulley.

A Gates kit- very good brand.

Just to put this one to bed!

After purchasing a re conditioned hp pump and not yet fitted! I had to mot the MH I asked that garage their opinion on the whine noise, they said possibly tight timing belt! So I took it back to the garage that fitted the belt in December and asked him to check it, and sure enough when I picked it up the noise was gone!

Anyone want to buy a new hp pump?

Cheers Ronnie
