I am shortly due to replace the clutch in my 2003 JTD Multipla. When I get it apart it would be prudent to examine the flywheel to decide whether it needs replacing. What do I need to look for when assessing the flywheel other than face wear?

There are some special tools to be used to evaluate a DMF.

.... Personally I'd just bite the bullet & replace it with the clutch while the gearbox is off so it doesnt have to come off again at x2 the cost....

I'm with ffoxy on this. Without special equipment it's virtually impossile to tell the condition of your DMF, unless it's like one I did on a Multipla last year when the centre bearing had gone. Even if it's ok now it might not be soon. It's really up to you whether you want to take a gamble on it.

I've had my clutch replaced, the DMF looked ok and wasn't checked other than visually. It's been fine. Personally I wouldn't replace something as pricey as a DMF unless I had suspicions that there was a problem with it.

But other more cautious (and wealthy) folk will disagree. :D

Yes... quite... but he did ask how to check... which needs special tools... a visual inspection is OK in as far as its OK to play Russian Roullette 5 times out of 6...

Thing is, a double removal of the gearbox etc will cost as much if not more...
