I have an issue of which I thought I resolved but has returned with vengeance
Passenger DRL keeps failing
First time around changed bulb worked briefly
But stopped working
The bulb holder was damaged due to high heat and cold temperatures while driving had become chard and brittle
So brought a replacement changed that hooray it’s working again
I drove from Mk and sandy both Drl’s were fine I got to location then as I parked up
Passenger stopped working again has anyone else got this issue and know how to fix it

I had no end of trouble with the DRLs on my 500X. The bulbs were black and the holders charred and melted.

The holders are rubbish in that the outer metal contact that should help take heat away from the bulb base only contacts a small area so any conducted heat is applied only to a small area of the plastic housing.

I initially, without replacing the holders (note Fiat know this is a problem and most Fiat dealers carry the holders as stock items), used copper grease around the outer bulb metal casing. This made them last a little longer. Did this several times and well as ensuring the best contact area setting.

To add to the annoyance the DRL warning sound and message only gets triggered when the car is below a low speed. So you drive from a 50mph into the 30mph, slow down futher for traffic etc. the "BONG" sound and DRL message to distract you from due care and attention of what is going on around you. Brilliant anti-safety feature. When you get back on the open road again and slow again the warning repeats. Meanwhile the DRL is still inactive.

In the end I gave up and put LED replacements in and informed my insurance company who were happy with the mod.

When you put LED replacements in, if your insurance company is happy, then you have to check that the DRLs actually dim when the headlamps are on. Some apparrantly do not which an MOT tester may pick up on.

Another solution is to put a lower wattage bulb in but then of course their brightness will be reduced.

My records show:

LEDs Ba15s 1156 P21w LED Bulb, 12V/24V 6000K Cool White
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09X46HBYY

I bought two packs (4 units). Reason for doing this is that if you get only two and one fails you may have difficulty getting replacements at a later date.

What I initially did was to install one LED on one side only and then compare (on the drive) the two DRLs both at day and night to check for anything that would bother me if I were another driver from different angles.

NOTE! on a dark evening after turning the car ignition off there will still be a very dim glow from the lamps. This is because they draw residual current from the body computer/system. This will stop after a few minutes. Bulbs do the same but you can't see any illumination, not enough current. Nothing to worry about and I've had no problems.

NOTE2! Do not attempt to replace headlamp bulbs with LEDs. It is illegal, will fail MOT and one risks blinging other drivers.
