I only found out they were making changes to the driving licence last night but apparently it was announced back in July. I wonder how many others didn't know about it.

Info

On top of the recent changes to the VED the DVLA are going to stop issuing the paper section of driving licences and we will no longer need them from January 1st 2015. Instead the DVLA are going to launch a new digital enquiry service to allow organisations such as employers or car hire businesses to see the information that would usually be on the counterpart.

Sounds good in theory but as it's the DVLA running this it's likely to be a monumental ****-up with people losing or gaining points at whim or worse having their licence taken away because someone with a similar name has a medical condition and it's been attributed to the wrong person. Of course they do this sort of thing anyway but a digital system probably means an even worse "computer says no" mentality. Thank christ I have a rare name and don't share it with anyone else in the UK :D

So I've no doubt the DVLA website will crash, just like it did with the Tax Disc fiasco.

Also interesting to note that when the new scheme comes into play, for a new driver taking their Practical Test they will only need their Photocard, where as currently you need both parts of your licence.

I know when I did my test it was about 1 week before the DSA changed the rules, where by if you didn't have you counterpart to your licence, you just signed a wee form.

Oh & Katie I doubt your surname is as rare as mine.
