Right, for those who don't know, I work as a HGV mechanic at a local hauliers, and currently the only mechanic there (H&S issue?). I'm working something like 50-58 hours / wk, with 39 being basic and the rest overtime, Currently on £10.30 / hr (so based on basic, I'm on just shy of 21K pa).

Pro's
I can get the use of the garage when required.

Con's:
Have to work in the pissing rain.
Have to work well into the night whenever a job is required to be finished by the morning (Occasionally until 8 at night)
Start at 7am
Having to work almost every weekend.

The job I've been asked to start on the 3rd of February is as a Mechanical fitter (Basically an assembly person). Hourly rate is a full £1 more per hour, but 1 hour less for basic pay. Almost £22.5K pa, however, I don't know what the overtime is like at the new place. Also, the new place is closer to home than my current job (About 2 minutes instead of 6).

Pro's:
Closer to home
More money per hour
Easier work
Hours are more social-able (8-4.30 mon-thu, 8-2 fri).

Con's:
Don't know what the job will fully entail, except from "Assembling handrails and general workshop work".
Don't know what overtime will be on offer.
Don't know if the job is completely permanent (Need to ask about that one)

So people, do YOU think it would be worth changing my job or just sticking with the same old?

Coming from someone who has worked now for around a dozen refrigeration companies all I can say is the grass isn't always on the other side, however, if you are still young with no massive financial worries then go for it.

I've changed employers every couple of years due to a love of learning and working on new and different kinds of fridges.

??? question for you why the f**k would it matter about what you want to do ?? its not our life we im assuming have NO interest in what you do with You're work life ?? this is a decision based on your thought and your personal responsibilities i mean im pretty sure no one cares im an HGV driver and i decided to stop doing it and i work in a bank safe now ??

hmmm i would probably say go for it!!!

I took a bit of a risk recently too, i left my very dull, boring, monotonous job, i was bored ****-less, and could not physically do all that was demanded of me, & was reprimanded when i didn't do it.....
The only pro's were i could use the van for personal use - so longs as i screwed about with the paperwork, and i got a fixed monthly wage.

I dumped this in favor of doing something i have wanted to do for years! I even quit the job before i had the new job secured with licence etc.

New job guarantee 40hrs but you only get paid for what you actually do, unlike my previous 'fixed wage'. i've lost some weekends now too, BUT i LOVE my job, i genuinely really enjoy going in to work now, & so longs as i do the hours, i can literally earn what i want (to to the maximum legal driving hours).

Im not looking back, and although a lot of folk told me / tried to persuade me to stay put, i am really glad i took the risk, (i could easily have ended up jobless!) and that it has paid off!

Don't be scared in what you do. Always remember, pro's built the Titanic, amateurs built the ark..!

Some of my job changes have worked out for the best. Some haven't.

But that's just the way it goes. As Boydie says, the grass aint always greener BUT at the same time...gotta try change at some point.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

What I forgot to add and most importantly, FUN, if you get absolutely zero job satisfaction at your work then chances are your probably in the wrong line of work.

Slightly harsh IMO. Sometimes getting opinions from others be it friends, family or randoms on t'interwebs can throw up reasons/options that hadn't previously been considered so why the hell not ask?

Scoop, going through your pros and cons

New job

Distance is immaterial as 2 minutes vs 6 minutes is nothing - even if that's an error 2 miles vs 6 miles is nothing
Easier work - but will you end up bored and wishing you were back in your old job? change is good but only if it's going to make life interesting. If you're going to wake up every morning dreading going into work then is it worth it?
Is there a chance of advancement or will you be in the same role for life?

Old job

If you tell them you've got a job offer elsewhere for more money and better conditions would they try and sweeten things to keep you?

Ultimately I can understand the new job is tempting in that you'll have more time to spend with Justin and Fiona but long term is it worth it? And on this point abyss is right in that only you can decide...

good luck

Harper - I'm just ignoring what abyss said to a degree, was kinda on the harsh side, must be PMS... Anywho...

As for easier work, I mean, I won't be expected to lift 6 leaf rear springs and 2 leaf front springs off and onto trucks pretty much myself, nor will I have to **** about lifting bloody heavy clutch packs and flywheels in confined spaces. Thats the way I was refering to easier work. Also, the fact that I do work 4 days out of 6 myself doesn't help neither. I do have slight satisfaction with where I am with my current job, however, that's only when I do a job that I enjoy like wiring and electrics, but when it comes to the HGV inspections and engine services on plant, where nothing is easy gotten to and totally "Clawrtied", making it difficult to do the job.

HOWEVER, what I don't know is what its going to be like at the new job, I would like to presume that the work will still be challenging, just without the sore back at the end of the day.

As said in the OP, I'm not sure on what is actually possible in this new job as I haven't asked all the questions yet.

I have already spoken to my boss and, obviously, he says that I'm better with where I am. Although, working in conditions that you wouldn't want a pet to walk around in (Stagnant water, general waste and what we like to call gitters (Just watered down mud)), makes me just not want to work for them anymore. Also, when working at the recycling depot, I'm expected to play with a 110V grinder when pissing down with rain and no waterproofs. (H&S issue again?)

Anyway, some more pros and cons there to be considered.

Sounds like you're quite fed up with your current job so perhaps better to jump to the new one and if it doesn't suit then jump to another.

You've got a huge world out there to explore so make the most of it

I'd jump ship tbh.

More money per hour + easier work decides for itself. Even if it doesn't work out, It's not like you're chained to the place, you can always move again to something else!

Just saying in the post he made the choice for himself so why bother asking if hed stayed at his other job hed be stupid so there was no need for the post and sorry if it was harsh just never see the point in asking randoms about my life its my own choice to make

I just wanted to know what others thought about the decision and what THEY would do in the same position :)

Regret something you have tried rather than regret not trying ; )

just do it OR demand better pay/conditions and the possibility of another pair of hands, raise concerns about working enviroment ie what would happen if you got pinned to the floor?
