I collect my new car from the dealer tomorrow, and 7 days free cover has been arranged through the Norwich Union Direct Driveaway Cover. This means that I don't have to arrange full insurance, so I can just drive the car the same day, correct? And when I arrange full insurance I'll ask for it to start on the 8th day? :(:(
Confused dot com.

that is correct, you are insured instantly for 7 days so yes, you get your insurance to start on the 8th day (or 7th day just to be sure)

Has to be the 8th day.
Is apparantly illegal to insure the same car with two different companies.
At least this is what Direct Line told me when i phoned them up and told them my situation. Which is the same as yours. Got my brand spanking red 09 GP last Saturday. Whooo. Taking it back on Thursday Booo.

I would have thought you can cancel the NU ins anytime you like and then get your full insurance from the stop date - but as the wheels of industry turn so very slowly be the time you get it sorted your driveaway would have expired - just check what cover you actually have, it may only be 3rd party whih is the only legal requirement to have which will cover the other persons damages but not yours(n)

I had my insurance started from the moment I picked up my Panda, even though my dealership had arranged the 7 day insurance via NU - just made it a whole lot easier for them when it came to taxing it.

Nothing was mentioned to me about having double cover, I just phoned up my company at the time, and said I was picking up a new car at such and such date and time!

Its not illegal to insure with 2 or more different insurers. it is unlawful to claim from more than one insurer for any single incident.
