Hi guys, hope this does not sound daft. This is my first diesel equipped with a DPF and I have noticed that some of the members have seen or know when the DPF is doing a regen. What I was wondering is how do you know? as on my car the warning light has never come on apart from when you initially switch the ignition on.

These are some signs, but also rad fan kicking in. :-During the regeneration, you may notice things like your engine making an unusual noise, a slightly pungent smell coming from the exhaust and an increase in your fuel consumption. This should all return to normal once the active regeneration process has been completed"
If most of your driving is faster dual carriageways for several miles you may not notice it often as engine will be running cleaner anyway so Regens less frequent, however if you do short journeys at slow speeds then engine will need to do a Regen more often.
Another point if it has do it often is the engine oil may get contaminated and smell of diesel, in which case an oil change is a good idea.
