Door handles, with a twist

Door handles, with a twist

Was at the scrappies today (getting a roof mounted aerial) when I noticed the Brava I was plundering has good handles.

Two questions:

1. My car is a MK1 S reg, the potential donor is MKII, I presume they are compatible? Both cars have the rubberised type that perish; the V reg donor handles are perfect though.

2. The sprung flap that is pushed aside by the key, that protects the lock barrel from road salt etc. is missing from my drivers door lock. Is this part of the barrel lock or can I replace it separately at the same time as the handles?

The scrappies wants £20 for the four handles; I can't make my mind up if I can be bothered doing ot for cosmetic reasons though. But if I can fix the lock protecting flap at the same time, that would be a bonus. Having to replace the locks would effectively write the car off!

Thanks for your help.

Changed one of my handles a while back and i THINK the flaps part of the lock itself, in fact i'm pretty definite it is, the lock/barrel is only held onto the handle by a circlip at the back which you can easily get at when you take the handle off, dont think you can replace the flap though, well not easily anyway, souns strange that the flaps missing though, where did and could it possible go? i've a hunch its just jammed in the open position inside from dirt and crap etc building up. When you take the lock/barrel out of the handle you might be able to see through it from the back or side and see if its still there or not, if so flushing the whole lock/barrel out with wd40 should free it up as normal. Look up the repair section on this site and the aptly named replacing door handle section which will give you some pics so you know what i'm on about and what it will look like, changing the handles is a footery job but worth it to be honest and £20 for 4 good ones is not bad either.

The door handles for both Mk1 and Mk2 are the same.

The lock cover that you are refering too is part of the lock. You remove the lock with 3 screws once the door handles are off the car. You then replace the locks with your locks so that when you put the key in, you can lock/unlock the car with the key.

So long as your cover for the barrels are working then there is no problem.

Like Stu R has said, however my JTD rubber handles where absolutely mint when i replaced them for plastic marea handles. I think MK2 ones where made better made. As i've seen some MK1 bravo's with appauling handles.

Oh and i would definately get all 4 for £20. You'd probably make about £10 - £15 profit selling them as pairs on ebay.

Waderider,

the guys are right, £20 for four good door-handles is a steal.
If you don't want them for yourself and they really are in good condition I'd like them.

You could make a few quid on the deal (only fair). Let me know if the idea appeals.
My MK1 handles are really dire, I doubt they'll last another winter. Buying from Fiat two front handles will be over £60 (for crappy Brava ones!)
It seems finding handles that are still in good nick is a rare thing indeed...you've walked into a good thing!

Cheers,
Stuart.

I got 2 marea handles for £9 from the scrappy! you just need to know how to deal with them! ;)
